[ARCHIVE] [SASSYandsisters] Well-known Arabic Sayings - Part 1 & 2

Post by Fnirk1 »

Long before Duolingo released the Arabic course there were some users who tried to spread some knowledge about the Arabic language. One of them was SASSYandsisters . They made several series of short posts, and their collection was originally found here: https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/31999313

Out of their collection I have found two very interesting posts:

Well - known Arabic Sayings 1# https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/31908047
Well-Known Arabic Sayings 2# https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/32018120

Both posts are saved here below in SASSYandsisters own words:

Well - known Arabic Sayings 1

إتفق العرب أن لا يتفقوا - Meaning: The Arabs agreed not to agree

*الصديق وقت الضيق - Meaning: The friend is there in the time of need

*مش كل مرة تسلم الجرة (dialect) - Meaning: Not every time does the jar stay fit (not every time will you be lucky)

*تعش تأكل غيرها (dialect) - Meaning: Live and eat more (actual meaning - often used when you hit someone and you say "live longer and you'll have more" - in Arabic the term "eat" often has double meanings) - this phrase is normally used by little kids when they fight lol.

*تأتي الرياح بما لا تشتهي السفن - Meaning (this one is really well known): Literal: The wind brings what the ships don't crave, actual meaning: things can go against our will just like the wind can control the ship's movement, if it's not there then the ship will slow down and if it's there the ship will speed up (Clever!)

*لا حياة لمن تنادي - Meaning: There's no life in the person you are calling (quite obvious: you're wasting your time, they're not listening it's like "talking to a wall")

*Anyone know more or want to share others from another language, I'll be happy to hear some :)

Well-Known Arabic Sayings 2

*(لكل وردة شوكها) -: "Every Rose has its thorns" - Every good thing has its negatives.

*(من حفر حفرةً لاخيه، وقع فيها) -: "That who dug a pit for his brother, fell in it" - Who tried to do bad to a someone, something bad happened to them.

*(ليس كل ما يلمع ذهب) -: "Not all that glitters is gold" - I think this is an English saying too, meaning, not all that looks good is good (not all who act good are good).

*(قل لي من تصاحب أقل لك من أنت) -: \"Tell me who you friend, I tell you who you are\" - Make good friends, for people judge from those who you hang out with, not with who you are.

*(إن الحديد بالحديد يفلح) -: "Iron with Iron works" - Similarly to the English saying "Diamonds cut diamonds", to beat something really strong, you must become strong.

*(لا تقل فول حتى يصبح في المكيول) -: "Don't say beans till they are in the bag" - Don't say you have something, till you actually have it.

*(من كان بيته من زجاج، لا يرشق الناس بالحجارة) -: "That who has a house made of glass, never throws stones at people" - Don't do bad things to others, especially when you are vulnerable to it yourself, for it will be easy revenge.

*(العلم نور) -: "Knowledge is light" - Probably one of the most well-known, meaning, knowledge lights up your way, when you neglect facts you can't see; you don't understand, and knowledge is your light. (very relatable to Duo in fact)

*(الصبر مفتاح الفرج) -: "Patience is the key to resolutions" - This one is quite popular, patience is the key to a good result so say someone was ill, if they are patient, they will become better and get a good result in the end. (if you don't rush learning a language and be patient, then you'll get good results, eh?)

*(العلم في الصغر كالنقش على الحجر) -: "Knowledge when young is like engravings on a stone" - This one is probably a favourite; meaning, it is easier to learn when you are younger, for knowledge at a young age, is like engravings on a stone which cannot be rubbed out. Simply: take the chance to learn whilst you are young, for the knowledge you will earn, will last forever... ;p

*Thanks for reading my 3rd Arabic post of today (which I made whilst watching a huge fire outta my window... on my birthday? Certainly not a coincidence!). Any other sayings, generally - doesn't have to be Arabic, feel free to write them below... Have a lovely (flamin' here) rest-of-what's-left-of-today? :3

Saying: من طلب العلا سهر الليالي literally means: He who asked for glory stayed up all night. actual meaning: He who wants success will stay up all night to get it (mostly said by parents when their kids don't study)
