[ARCHIVE] Hessian dialect?

Is there such thing as a Hesse or Hessian dialect or unique accent of German? My grandfather was born in that region and yet people have commented that his accent is more Bavarian and redneck. Is Hesse known to have a unique accent or is it just labeled as southern German?
Thanks

In Hesse, there doesn't exist just one dialect, but several regional ones.
Usually, the dialect spoken in the Frankfurt area is called Hessian.

I think the link to the wikipedia page of hessian dialects explains it quite well.

The dialect in the neighbouring part of Franconia, which is nowadays part of Bavaria, is very similar. But Franconian is not Bavarian. There are several dialects in Bavaria as well.
