Re: update for duolingo
Did you mean the one path update? In which language?

Re: update for duolingo
He probably got the message that Duolingo has updated. I get it almost every day, yet I never see any changes.
Re: update for duolingo
The last update is a disaster for me. It is almost impossible to repeat exercises because you have to scroll for a long time.
There are only a fraction of points left and only a part of those involved in the group received the update. It's been hard to stay in the league.
The clear structure of the exercises has been lost.
How could such an update be released?

Re: update for duolingo
I had a lot of my Legendary settings reversed with the update.
Those seemed to have become more difficult.
I struggle enough with trying to learn a difficult language like Hungarian.
Re: update for duolingo
The latest update is the worst ever - appalling. No cracked discs to practice, and you have to do five practices to earn the same number of points for the leagues as could be earned in one practice before the update. It's also visually irritating.

The test sentences for legendary levels are now picked from a set of up to four old skills, so going legendary is a daunting task even for less complicated languages than Hungarian. I am struggling with Dutch / Czech. Even before the update I could not make it without a cheat sheet, now I need a cheat book
Re: update for duolingo
I like it, too.
I didn't to start with - I wasn't happy about the lack of choice regarding which skill to work on, mourned the loss of the stories and didn't like the visual format. I gave it a go, though, and must admit that it has grown on me. I like the fact that there are learning objectives, that the lessons are divided into clearly marked sections and there is personalised practice. I do suspect that the way the Legendary is set up is designed for people paying for unlimited attempts, but it is working for me and I am certainly making progress with Chinese. Still no sound on the Chinese course for the last pair of items in the match-up exercises, but overall it's a thumbs-up from me.
Re: update for duolingo
I find it really terrible. I was half way through module 3 in French and I had a plan to complete unit 6 by the summer next year. In unit 4 I knew the past tense was coming. Now since the update I have no idea which module I am supposed to be on. I have passed the test to jump to module 41, which is after they start the past tense. That is clearly not where I am meant to be. Any idea how to find the appropriate module to start with?
Its very frustrating also that I have completed every lesson up to legendary and that is all gone now. I know it doesnt take away what I learned, but still it is demotivating. I have gone from doing about an hour per day down to one random attempt to find where my level is per day.
I have subscribed to merrise as well, and that looks really good for vocab but not for sentence construction. Does anyone know any other good options out there with a similar style to old Duolingo?

You may check sites mentioned in this discussion: viewtopic.php?t=32-multi-language-resources Corinnebelle made a great list, however, nothing is just like the old Duolingo.
I guess you already know the Duome interface https://duome.eu/"your-Duolingo-login"/progress with the Tree and the list of Skills to enter the old Duolingo lessons (without stories) and Duolingo addresses https://www-internal.duolingo.com/learn (the old tree) and https://www-internal.duolingo.com/stories (stories), however, it is based and running on Duolingo data and it is solely up to them whether and when they block that.
Duome has its own simple sentence Practice for 20 languages (translation from those languages to English) - just choose the desired flag under "Practice" in the upper row on the Duome main page or write the address with language abbreviations at its end (for Spanish just https://duome.eu/practice, for other languages https://duome.eu/practice/en/ru for Russian, https://duome.eu/practice/en/fr for French etc.)
Re: update for duolingo
Gentianopsis Thanks so much for that, this is really helpful. I normally use the app on my phone, but I think I will try to do these on my desktop while they are available still.

Is there a typo in one of your links because the following link doesn't work:

There is no typo. Instead of the text in quotes, you write your own Duolingo name.

Re: update for duolingo
The internal duolingo is also available as an android app. It is strange because I cannot find it in the google store but as I typed the URL for internal duolingo in the browser of my mobile phone, the website itself suggested to install the app, and it did it. The internal app does not work so smooth as the official duolingo release, sometimes it hangs and it does not switch keyboard layouts, but is still OK. I am glad to see the crowns again in the title bar. One thing that I am missing in internal duolingo are speaking exercises. May be I am missing some setting or something, yet neither in the desktop version nor in the mobile app i get the chance to speak.

Perhaps dakanga might be able to help you with this? They are an expert at the French tree/one path.

Re: update for duolingo
I found the listening exercises on the iPad app very useful. I don't care about the XP. I just found that they benefitted my language learning as they were interactive. You can still get them if you pay for Duolingo Plus. They disappeared yesterday.
That was one of the few language exercises I could do while walking. I can't do that anymore.

Re: update for duolingo
Having been underwhelmed by the web version of the update, I was grateful for the weeks during which the old version remained on my android phone. Sadly, this evening, my phone succumbed to the update.
Initially, it was slow as molasses. Then, the app abruptly exited. Upon a second attempt, the response-time was improved, but there was one question for which I was marked wrong before entering any response. Oddly, when I finished the entire exercise, I was told I had done everything perfectly.
I imagine they'll work out most of the kinks over time. Still, the overall gist of the change is likely to remain.
So, I've decided to view it in a positive light.
- Now I'll spend less time on Duolingo (probably little more than that required to maintain my streak), leaving more time for study methods I find more effecient.
- Assuming I don't become acclimated to this latest rework of the app, I'll save myself the money I now spend on Duolingo Plus (or whatever they're calling it now).

With the help of the links above I was able to track down where I am supposed to be. At least I can pick up where I was (kind of). I found where they start the passe compose and the imparfait and I am comfortable with the level again now. The stories though are way behind where I was so I just have to repeat those again; which is not the end of the world.
I'm glad I discovered Memrise because of this, as it is really good for hearing how things are said naturally by real people so I took a subscription for that and will do it along side duolingo.
Even with the changes to the modules not being great and with my progress being discarded, I think that I am going to continue with duolingo as the lessons suit my style of learning and because I am so far in.

mcfr I am glad you found the help you need! Yes, Duolingo has the nice bite-sized lesson. I hope you get your path/tree finished.

.... and today the link doesn't work anymore (not for me anyway).
I clicked on it earlier and I got the message that it was being updated. I also clicked on the official Duo site and received the same message.
Now when I click on:
https://www-internal.duolingo.com/learn
It redirects me to:
https://www.duolingo.com/learn
Looks like there's no alternative but to grit my teeth and try and get used to it .....

Yeah, I'm getting the same. Looks like they got rid of the tree.

Re: update for duolingo
Moonbeam and JudieLC, for what it's worth, my 5.66.5 Android version still shows me the tree. So maybe downloading an old version of the Android app is the last available line of defense against the snake...

Re: update for duolingo
Ah, and here I cannot help you, because I have no idea if a similar workaround exists for these. (Comparing apples and oranges, I guess).
What worries me, is that my "start" position on the snake (which I can see on the website) did not change at all since the snake first appeared. I have opened a bunch of new skills, I have turned some old ones to gold and others to purple, and I'm slowly working into the 8th section (out of 10) of the English->French tree, while the stupid snake is still showing me in the middle of unit 111 of 197.
I guess if my Android tree stops working, I'll just test out of most of the remaining sections (I think the only grammar I haven't done on Duolingo yet are conditionals, and I sorta know how to use them already). After testing out of as much as I can, I'll just do only the final lessons to turn it all gold, and let my streak expire (576 days at the moment), without bothering to turn more skills to purple (I hear it's much harder on the snake).
The snake is really killing the joy of being able to chose what specific aspect you want/need to study as well as the difficulty level of what you want/need to study.

Haha, apples and oranges.
I guess as long as your Android version keeps working you can keep plugging along.

Re: update for duolingo
Or install an Android emulator software (virtual machine).
Not sure if one exists for Mac/Linux.
Oracle VirtualBox missed some basic drivers (audio, host vs guest mouse, etc.) when I tried it in 2017/18 on an old WinXP Laptop.
More choices are available for recent OS versions with up-to-date graphic card drivers (OpenGL, DirectX).
A true Android emu (all in one) is probably the better thing.
