Duolingo translates the sentence

he hurt his shoulder from falling off his motorcycle --> Il s'est fait mal à l'épaule en tombant à moto.

I never get this. I always want to say:
Il s'est fait mal à l'épaule en tombant de sa moto.

Am I wrong?

I’m not sure your phrasing is absolutely wrong, but I look at it this way:

I believe “on a motorcycle” is « à moto », and falling is just one of the things people do on a motorcycle, so it uses the same form. There is no need to emphasize that one falls off. In fact, many times one can fall while still in the riding position.

Je dirais aussi : en tombant de moto, ou de sa moto ; on peut aussi dire en tombant à/en moto ; je pense que c'est un raccourci de tomber en roulant à moto.
