Here I will list some new features being added to the forums:

  • avatars are now up to 200x200 pixels @ 100KB max

  • upvoting is available (downvoting is not, but moderators can clear the upvotes for wrong grammar posts if necessary)

  • more language packs (if yours is still missing - please, tell me)

  • I keep adding more duolingo graphics to make this place more familiar

  • stickies (you need to edit the first post in a topic to make it a sticky)

  • a custom RTL BBCode while editing - for posts in Arabic

  • custom BR/LB BBCodes for line breaks

  • a BBCode for FontAwesome icons [fa]arrow-left[/fa] (cheatsheet: https://fontawesome.com/v4/cheatsheet/)

  • YouTube is also working now, as well as many other "media" links

  • Duolingo Username field and country flags in your profiles - these flags are being quoted on the front page next to your usernames, adding a little more flavour to the forums )

And here's something new for duome.eu profile/progress pages:

  • Daily progress chart is now 30 days wide

  • Daily progress chart is now full-size and scrollable on mobile devices (auto-scrolls to the last date on the chart)

Great! I'm loving the fact the individual forums are searchable making it easier to find something in your language when you need help.

Does Hebrew have a language pack? It's a little sticky to work with, but you may have already got something going. There's always trouble when one is switching back and forth between Hebrew and English. Due to right to left issues. You can't insert text easily. It jumps to the end of the line.

Hebrew does have a language pack but it's rather incomplete (yet it's the latest available)..

I really would like to say, that after exploring the site for the last few days that it is really very well done!

The layout is fantastic, the attention to detail is superb.

It is everything the Duolingo forums should have been and more.

Congratulations on a job well, it is very impressive.

Bravo to you!

You've done so much in such a short time.
I'm rather amazed - and very appreciative.

Today it seems that DaKanga and evgeeeeny - hope I haven't misspelled their names! - put in a lot of work to move content from Duolingo to this forum! I really appreciate what you are creating here! And it's awesome to have the chance to request things, but so far I'm just happy that some people took action and build this from scratch.

Thanks!

  • YouTube links are now allowed, as well as many other "media" links to other meda platforms

  • You can choose "your country" or be it "your preferred language" flag in your profile in addition to what you list in your signature - this flag would be quoted next to your username on the front page and some other places, adding a little more flavour to the forums )

  • There's a new Duolingo Username field in our profiles - we could make it mandatory if we ever need an extra layer of spam protection, but in the meantime I'd rather leave it optional. You decide.

PS: if you ask me - with duome... try to stay as detached as possible" from the former (or current) DL
e.g. why add a DL alias field for extra spam protection? DL wasn't SPAM safe, neither Identity nor age safe (i.e. confirmed).
And many people have muliple DL aliases. (split forum/learning/school)

Looks great

Dunno if it's possible but I have a suggestion: at the top of the screen there is the header bar with the logo on the left and your username and notificiation bell on the right, which stays fixed while scrolling. But the Quick Links button below that, with the three lines, that leads to useful buttons like 'New Posts' 'Your posts' etc does not stay fixed while scrolling. Is it possible for the Quick Links button to stay fixed as well, while scrolling, so that you don't have to scroll back up to the top to access it?

Thanks

... so that you don't have to scroll back up to the top to access it?

in every white "zone" , i.e. of each reply, in the bottom right corner, there is the "back to top" little grey circle button.
Would that help already?

Yes, it does make things easier. Thanks

I asked because in some other forums I have used the Quick Links are fixed and always accessible so I wondered if it were possible here.

... but moderators can clear the upvotes for wrong grammar posts if necessary)

Let's once and for all forget the words "upvoting" and "downvoting".
The single button provided here on duome. forum is named "thank you" - and that's very good, and very well appreciated, when reading people's opinions so far.

But ... it's not a MOD's task to take "thank you"s away.

If a MOD is language specialist and wants to correct some given wrong grammar, let the MOD act just as any other user (not as a MOD)
and quote/correct the wrong entry, like any other registered user would do.

The aim is to NOT FALL into the same system of misuse of "power" by MOD's in a dual role on the former DL forums.

A MOD moderates a discussion = supervises the rules of conduct / deletes-blocks entries if needed.
But a MOD is not to correct the contents or give a personal opinion, unless again as a normal user (i.e. under another non-MOD alias)

imho...

Re: What's new - Curriculum for Swedish CEFR

This is an invite for all people who plan to learn Swedish, Norvegian, or Danish.

On the Swedish forum you'll find a subforum "Min svenska läroplan" (my Swedish curriculum)
and the intention is to start a discussion with the learning community on what is needed to get to any of the CEFR levels A1/A2 B1/B2 C1/C2. Questions on this can/may and will be answered by the language experts, native and fluent speakers, as well as people who have completed (or are in the process of completing) their own curriculum.

The results of the discussion will be neatly summarized and will lead to the definition of a curriculum for fluent Swedish.
Every step in the curriculum will be documented and will contain links to resources helping you to get at a specific level.

That's the idea. So be welcome to post your ideas under Min svenska läroplan (my Swedish curriculum) => Ideas

Re: What's new - Swedish TIP for the Week

On the Swedish from English forum there will be once a week the "TIP for the week - YYYY-MM-DD" post. You will find any material encountered in your posts, in the General Discussion in Swedish forum, on news sites, and words/sites that may be of interest to a person learning Swedish.

And of course you may react on these, and share your view and share your own words and interesting tips.

The first TIP - to start the series - is the link to 50languages - Swedish for beginners

Re: What's new - STORIES in SWEDISH

All you ever wanted, have been longing for on DL and never got...

the SWEDISH STRORIES are being developed

but - this is a community initiative - it's not to be the work of a single person or author.
Let's build the stories together.

And they aim at being better than the DL stories (FR, NL, ...but no Swedish stories)
And they aim at being better than the unofficial ones (only 3 beginners stories in Swedish)

READ about the aim here at duome, and read how you can contribute and be mentioned as (co-)author

Re: What's new - Bump a topic

by Basler Biker

Owners of a topic may see appear the option "Bump topic" under the Topic "Wrench" tool.
Here are my findings, so far.

It only appears

  • when you are the owner of the topic
  • when the topic has been pushed down due to newer topics

If you have "edited" the topic you can bump it. As a result:

  • the topic will be "unread" for everyone, thus be seen on the next visit
  • the topic will appear on top of the forum, just below all stickies.

Use the "Bump Topic" once on the most important Sticky Topic. It will then be on top of the stickies list ;-)

This is all I found about the "bumping". Maybe it has some effects that aren't decribed here yet ;-)
So I'll add those later.

Some improvements for duome.eu profile/progress pages:

  • Daily progress chart is now 30 days wide

  • Daily progress chart is now full-size and scrollable on mobile devices (auto-scrolls to the last date on the chart)

There is now a separate section for this in the first post in this topic.

There's now a second night mode switch next to your avatar in the upper right corner - trying to make some features more accessible regardless of where you are on the page.

If it's better like this, I will make this change permanent (removing the old button), so please, provide some feedback.

I don't use this feature, but I agree with dakanga, it's great to have it always at a one-click distance.
