Children's Books Forever offers a few free titles, including a Waldo story.
Iltasatu site offers fairytales, both Finnish and world classics for free. Most of them are intermediate level, although there are some easier stories among them too.
If you're using an iOS device, iBooks offers some free titles in Finnish (available at least in Finland). These include some children's books by Johanna Nordblad for absolute beginners (also available in English and Estonian if you want to compare). A bit more demanding children's book by EIina Malmi which also has audio. If you are on the intermediate level Outoja tarinoita by Paula Merensuo is a good choice. You can also search for Punahilkka, which leads you to a translation of Little Red Riding Hood.
There are also classics available on iBooks including fairytales by Zacharias Topelius, stories by Teuvo Pakkala, and plays by Minna Canth, or if you want more advanced material, novels and short stories by Juhani Aho, Santeri Alkio, Maiju Lassila, and Johannes Linnankoski among others, as well as Finnish riddles collected by Elias Lönnrot. There are also poetry collections by Eino Leino and Uuno Kailas available. If you want to read translated literature, you can find Verne and many other authors for free, even Shakespeare (if you're feeling very ambitious).
If you're hungry for news, Selkosanomat has those for intermediate level learners. Also included are sports news and other things, such as recipes (there's one for a delicious looking bilberry pie on the front page right now).
If you know of more free reading sources, please comment below.
Happy learning!
