the best house wine?

That is not the same thing as the best wine in the house in english, but rather means the best bulk or cheap wine . . .

 • El vino de la casa: wine produced by the restaurant itself. Some establishments have their own winery and wine cellars to store the bottles. El mejor vino de la casa is the best wine they've made.

 • El mejor vino (e.g. sírvame el mejor vino): the best and most expensive wine you can order in that restaurant. It's usually not of own production, but from a reputable independent winery.

It's the same in German, Hauswein and Wein des Hauses. Originally, Hauswein was the wine produced by the winemaker for own consumption. Today it is the cheapest wine that is served in a restaurant, as explained by @explorer and dochawk. It usually doesn't come in bottles but in casks and is served in carafes.
Talking about casks, there is a nice Italian idiom: Volere la botte piena e la moglie ubriaca, to want a full barrel and a drunk wife. It corresponds to have your cake and eat it or, in French, avoir le beurre et l'argent du beurre. There isn't really a German correspondent, you just translate the English version. Does anybody know about other languages?

 years ago in law school, we actually splurged and ordered the 750 of the house wine one day when there were three of us at a place we could actually affort.

I was expecting a carafe, but instead he brought out a bottle and unscrewed the cap!

This was the late 80s, when that meant a lot more than it does today . . .
