[ARCHIVE] 33 Words that can be BOTH cognates and false friends

Post by EranBarLev »

Original post by HelpfulDuo | Archived post

In previous posts we discussed cognates, words that are similar and share the same meaning across different languages, and false cognates (aka "false friends"), words that look and sound alike in two languages but have different meanings.

Here we introduce you to a third category: words that can be BOTH cognates and false cognates. These look/sound alike and share the same meaning, but they also have at least one additional meaning that doesn't apply in the other language.

Another word that really tripped me up, as I could not understand the mass of advertising at all the bus and metro stops and even in grocery stores for the pills to alleviate, constipação (gripe)!

Hi Scutigera,

Great suggestion! "Aniversário" could definitely be added to the table. Evident meaning = anniversary; additional meaning = birthday

Thanks for contributing to make this post even more useful to users!

And of course, feel free to save these for studying!
