What's the difference between dhalika and tilka? Does it depend on gender of the nouns?

Yes, exactly! Tilka is for a distant feminine singular and dhalika for distant masculine singular.
For example “that table” would be:
تِلكَ الطاولة
And “that chair” would be:
ذَلِكَ الكرسي
