The Checkpoint 5 practice

Checkpoint practices are available on the website or by signing into Duolingo on a browser on the smartphone. Duolingo removed checkpoint practice from the app sometime in 2021. All examples here are from the English to French tree in Duolingo. In theory, conclusions drawn from this tree in how the Checkpoint Practice works apply to other Duolingo trees.

Recent Changes in Checkpoint Quizzes

There used to be a test at the end of the checkpoints, which was part pre-test, part post-test. It looks like they did away with that in early 2022. Now, there are tests on the website for the first three sets, which are twenty questions from the section that you completed. No pre-test.

After taking the test, you have checkpoint quizzes available. The quizzes pick twenty questions from one skill within the available range. The ranges are:

  • CK 1: 1.01 Basics to 1.11 Restaurant
  • CK 2: 2.01 City to 3.02 Groceries
  • CK 3: 3.03 Shopping 2 to 4.06 Family 4.
  • Ck 4: 4.07 Paris to 5.06 Weather.
  • CH 5: 5.06 Weather to 6.08 Together.
  • CH 6: 6.09 Opinion 2 to 7.13 Phone Call.

Supporting documents for the checkpoint five ranges can be found in Exhibits One & Two. I did a few checkpoint quizzes every day & tracked my results over two months.

The Checkpoint 5 practice picked twenty questions from one skill between 5.06 Weather and 6.08 Career. It did not pick questions from any of the grammar skills. You can tell which lesson the questions are coming from by comparing the sentences you get with the vocabulary lists in Duo for Schools. In all the checkpoint 5 quizzes that I took, each session of 20 questions was associated with one skill.

One way to use the Checkpoint quizzes

If you set a goal to complete all the legendary lessons in, say, Checkpoint 5, the Checkpoint quizzes can be useful to target your practice to achieve that goal. You may even want to modify your goal to the skills that you'll get in checkpoint 5 practice rather than lessons 5.01 Decorating to 5.24 Encounters. Do the first 5 lessons in Set Five when you work on Checkpoint 4. Do the first eight legendary lessons in set six when you're doing the Checkpoint Five practices. Presumably, Birdbrain is picking the questions you'll get, so you'll be working more in the skills it thinks you need to work on in that Checkpoint, at least at first. Eventually all the skills were practiced in the range of lessons covered by the checkpoint five quizzes.

On the web, there are no English tiles, so this function is useful to practice the kinds of free-form French to English questions you'll get on the legendary exam. Remember too, that Duo can be picky about not accepting regionalisms and alternate answers when it asks for an English translation from a phrase in French. For instance:

Elle a arraché le sac à dos de cet homme.
She grabbed the backpack from that man. (marked as an error)
She grabbed that man's backpack. (recommended answer)

The Score Card

After you finish a checkpoint practice, some versions of Duolingo will give you a scorecard. (See Exhibit Three). The scorecard lists the questions you got in the checkpoint practice. If you click on the checkmark in a box in the scorecard, a pop-up dialogue box appears of your response and the correct response. Dictation questions are called Type what you hear or Tap what you hear. You can click on the blue icon to hear what you were asked to write.

This scorecard is available on the website version of Duolingo and on my phone when I select Desktop Site and use Duolingo through the browser. The tradeoff with the latter method is that you'll have to answer twenty questions in very tiny font size to get the scorecard when the lesson is finished. The functionality was designed for using Duolingo on a laptop.

The Future of Checkpoint Practices

There are some doubts on whether the checkpoint practice will remain in Duo's Next Big Update. The 80% of Duolingo Users on the App haven't seen a Checkpoint Practice in a long time. They took the checkpoint practices away from the app & replaced it with information on what percentage of users complete what percentage of the crowns.

The checkpoint practices don't fit in with the XP scoring system that Duolingo has put in on the app nor the structure of the questions. It's generally one XP for answering a question, two XP for answering the last two "hard" questions. Checkpoint quizzes are twenty questions and don't necessarily follow the script of the last two questions being "hard questions".

The lessons covered by the checkpoint practices don't cover the range that any reasonable person would expect it to cover. A checkpoint 5 quiz ought to cover the lessons from 5.01 Decorating to 5.24 Encounters. Rather than try to fix this, Duolingo might junk it.

It would be great if Duolingo had blog entry that serves as a user manual for the types of lessons you can do on its website. This entire document could be cut to a couple of paragraphs if I didn't have to write it like a research paper & describe the experiments I used to discover features of the Checkpoint quiz that Duolingo should just tell us about.

All the website says about the Checkpoint Five practice is: "Checkpoint Complete! Now you can talk about your health, studies, and interests. You can also ask for help and describe future plans. Practice +10 XP."
