I found both and don't know if the one in singular or in plural is more commonly used:
mettre les pieds dans le plat / mettre le pied dans le plat
Literally (plural): to put the feet in the dish
Meaning: to be a bit to blunt; the speaker may not realize that his/her bluntness is inappropriate; to say something that is inappropriate in a particular society or a particular context
