Translator Jumble

Post by Corinnebelle »

Here's something I'm wondering. If someone wrote it in English and someone translated it into another language and someone else translated it into another language and so forth and so forth. What would it come out in English after it has been through say five or ten different languages?

Anyone interested in this experiment? First person writes a sentence. Second person will translate it to another language. And so forth until it gets to five or ten times, then someone can translate it back to English.

First sentence:

 1. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog
 2. El veloz zorro marrón salta sobre el perro perezoso. (I think this next one is the same language but in plural.) El marron zorro ràpido salta sobre los perros perezosos.

I’m up for that!

How about we start with The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. Does that work for you?

Jacko079 I'm expecting you to think of one. You can use that one. It will interesting how this will work with different sentences probably depending on the idioms different languages use for those ideas. That is if we have enough participants.

Interesting idea!

Do you mean native speakers of each language? Or a mix of us learners?

Could try it with learners first, as it's just for fun and interest anyway.

I suggest each translator somehow hides/edits out their translation when the next translator posts theirs, and then all are revealed again at the end.

Looking forward to this. Nice one! :)

I like "veloz zorro marron", but how about someone translates it as I wrote it into the next language?

I'm interested to see how "rapido" turns out.

Can I suggest that poster of the first new language in each thread monitors the thread, but, more importantly, each new contributor, responds by quoting the most recent post with all the links in that thread.

Threads to now

EN>DE
EN>AR

Also could posters please NOT post more than one step in the chain, that is, just one translation into one language, then let someone else come along and translate into the next language. If we don't do that, th 'Chinese whisper 'effect will be lost.

In Spanish the basic idea of this game is called "teléfono descompuesto" ("broken telephone"). In it, people sit in a circle. One of the people begins by making up a phrase and whispers it to the person on the left, who whispers it to the next person, and so on, until the message reaches the initial person, which then tells the group both the original and the final message. The discrepancy between them is usually quite funny, especially when the group is large.

Thanks gmads .

Once we finish with this 'simple declarative sentence' id like to try the process again with a some slightly more abstract words/ideas, and then move on towards something that might be a little ambiguous.

It will be interesting to see how far it moves with just five steps.

The key factor here is the whispering. We should not let the translators know the original piece of text because, consciously or not, this knowledge will influence the entire process of translation and the intended results will be different.

Let's implement this somehow in the next stage of the experiment.

Sometimes I play with Google Translator and enjoy the results... it's similar to the spanish "whispering game":

Smart people are used to making puns -> To ITALIAN -> Le persone intelligenti sono abituate a fare giochi di parole -> Then to RUSSIAN -> Умные люди привыкли играть в словесные игры -> German -> Kluge Menschen sind es gewohnt, Wortspiele zu spielen -> Catalan -> Les persones intel·ligents estan acostumades a jugar a jocs de paraules ->
And again in English, RESULT -> Smart people are used to playing word games

Ooops! This time is quite similar, hahahah!

I fully support 🇺🇦!

One person should act as the Master of the Game, sending a private message to the first participant with the sentence to be translated, and then sending that translation to the next person. And so on till the end of the experiment.

Knowing the previous translations is like cheating because you get some extra information, or what's worse, you can always take the original sentence as a reference. Of course mistakes are going to be made all along the way. But that's the funny thing about this, isn't it?

People we will need to get this thing going. :)

 • The Master of the Game

Any volunteers? Possibly Corinnebelle?

 • Anyone who wants to participate in the translating itself

I think the people who are translating must specify to the MATG which language they are translating from, and which language they are translating that sentence into.

 • New sentence?

Do we need a new sentence to work off of? Any ideas?
