When the sentence had to do with "joining our office" DL required a future form of להתחבר, and then required the future form of לֹהצטרף in the sentence that had the context of "joining together to prepare for the exam", which certainly sounds more intimate than "joining a group or organization". I had to insert the opposite of what I understand the words to mean - according to Pealim.
