Tall and large trees in the forest...

Post by David680268 »

Hi all,

I have another question and I haven't found an answer so far, perhaps because I am unable to load sentence discussions right now (I hope this is just a temporary problem...).
Duo wants me to translate

"There are large trees in the woods."

I wrote "Ormanda uzun ağaçlar vardır".
Duo wants "büyük' instead of uzun.

Is my answer wrong?

Yes, uzun ağaçlar would be "tall trees".

Thank you again, Mustafa.
My inner mathematician is delighted. Mathematicians have a problem solving strategy that is both simple and effective: Show that you can really reduce a seemingly complicated problem to a simpler problem. In my case, this means that understanding the difference between "uzun ağaçlar" and "büyük ağaçlar" reduces to the simpler problem of understanding the difference between 'tall trees' and 'big trees' in English. A 'tall person' and a 'big person' look quite different in my imagination. I am sure that I will finally understand the difference between tall and big trees while taking a walk in the forest.

Adding links to the sentence discussions for reference:
https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/2624849
https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/18487154 (reverse sentence)

Thank you, Danika. The reverse sentence discussion is loading again, although the first link just leads to a very nice image of an owl sleeping on the moon (= forums are offline).

Strange! See if one of these works for you instead:
https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/2624 ... arge-trees
https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/26248499/

Thank you again for the links. I have been able to open them, but they seem to lead to the same discussion. Anyway, may question has been fully answered! I don't know why the sentence discussion page would not load when I did the exercise.

It happens sometimes. You can google the full sentence adding "Duolingo" and find the sentence discussion. It usually works. For example, if you google "There are large trees in the woods duolingo", this is the first result that appears.
