Drill - Write this in English: Дім там.

Post by Kelikaku »

Write this in English: Дім там.
My solutions:
There is home.
There is a house.
There is the house.

Correct solutions:
Home is there.
The house is there.

Should these have been marked as incorrect possible solutions?

This is correct as well.

The English word "is" is transitive. Was this not a correct solution?

"Дім там" – answers the question "Де дім?" = "Where is the house/home?"

"There is a house" can be translated "Є дім." Sounds strange without any description (place, kind, size etc.)

So, would "Є дім..." sound like an answer to a question such as "Well, are there any buildings at all there?

Then it would be: "Гаразд, там взагалі є якісь будинки?" – "Є один дім."

Sorry that I'm so late to this. But the translation of the sentence is correct: "The house is there." In Ukrainian the article can be omitted, so it is understood "house is here" or "home is here" is the same as "the house/home is there". When you say "There is a house" you are changing the structure of the sentence to be a complex-sentence. Є дім is "there is a house", while Дім там means "the house is there".

Де Келікаку? (Where is Kelikaku?)
Келікаку там? (Is Kelikaku there?)
Є Келікаку. (There is Kelikaku.)
Келікаку там. (Kelikaku is there.)

For "There is a house" you would just flip the word order around: "Там дім." (where as "there is" actually points to a physical location, rather than just saying that "a house exists", which "є дім" does.)

"Там дім" answers the question "Що там?" ("What's there") and can be translated "There is a house there/over there".
