In English the normal answer to 'how are you?' would be 'very well' but not 'very fine'

... the normal answer ...

In this context - what are you determining as "normal" to be?

Thanks so very much.

It just sounds a bit off in English, but it also isn't quite correct as a translation. "Da" means "good" and "iawn" in this context is like "very", it is acting as an adverb rather than an adjective:

da iawn - very good
oer iawn - very cold
dw i'n iawn - I'm OK / I'm fine
dw i'n da iawn - I'm very good / very well

It is a bit confusing because both "iawn" and "fine" have multiple different meanings.
