Tip 1:
Zayin in cursive curves the same way as the top of the z in English zigs. Gimel opens up from the right in it's curve just like a capital G. (If you don't know gimel and zayin are the same in shape in Hebrew, but mirrors of each other.) Our alphabet did original come from the Hebrew alefbet.

Tsadi sofit points up from the right whereas peh sofit points down.
Tip 2: In loan words from other languages, place names etc. expect a lot of ט, ק, ס as opposed to ת, ש, כ. There is also ' used with 'ג to make j as in jeans בג'ינס. And 'צ to ch like in cheetah צ'יטה. Older words generally have less "vowel" letters, א,ע,י,ו loan words are more sounded out with most "vowels" in place instead of being part of other "consonants".
