Is anyone else studying Hebrew?

Post by Corinnebelle »

I seem to be almost the only one here. Is anyone else also studying Hebrew? How have you been since the forums closed on Duolingo? Were you able to find other resources to answer your questions?

I hope no one feels they shouldn't write here because I am still adding to the archive material.

There is now a sentence discussion extension which will link DL and Duome. When you comment on a sentence in DM it will move from the sentence discussion forum to the Hebrew forum. Hopefully soon we will have a subforum in Hebrew that will contain these sentences. With the sentence discussion extension we can continue the fun!

Hope to see you in the sentence discussions and writing in the Hebrew forum too! :D

I've also been studying Hebrew for a couple of months.
But I hardly use Duolingo. And this language is not my priority right now.

Thank you for all your help in correcting me! I make a lot of mistakes! :)

About לשמע, apparently it has two spellings?

לִשְׁמֹעַ ~ לשמוע
lishmoa
to hear

Pealim

I suppose yours is the better one?

The spelling לִשְׁמֹעַ is archaic. And without niqqud you need the ו. The word לשמע is usually understood as "leshema" and means "for audio", or "to the sound of".

בסדר, אני מבין. דרך אגב, אנשים לא משתמשים בפועל "להגיד" בהווה אלא בשם פועל, בזמן עבר ובזמן עתיד.

I think yes because the root of that verb is ג.ל.ה. I've come across different words having that particular root: גילוי (revelation, discovery), התגלה (to be revealed).

Have you ever heard of Morfix dictionary? That is a good one. And Milog (מילוג) is a Hebrew-Hebrew dictionary.

מגלה can mean "reveal", "discover", or in this context it means "tell (a secret)".

HiCorinnebelle!
Thank you very much for your offer, but my approach is to use only input at the basic and intermediate level when learning a language. I never practice writing or speaking at a basic level. So I hardly ever use Duolingo for the same reason.
This month I am absolutely busy and I am not learning Hebrew.
My method when learning a language from scratch is:

 • Do not rush. I learn it for one week or two and skip learning for four or five week.
 • Learning to read, using the usual language script. I spend a lot of time with phonetic and phonology, and in Hebrew I try to master its script, also its handwriting.
 • Listening from day one. My first goal is to understand the spoken language. Of course, reading is easier, but I read and listen to simple stories at the same time. I use Lingq and I use a slow speed.
 • From time to time I use Memrise or watch some videos to learn some basic vocabulary.

eI000yo You sound a bit like me, leave it for a week or two. That's how I do my skills on Duolingo. I do a new one and then a different old one each time. I think it lets it sink in a bit more that way.

Once I got going I actually found speaking and understanding easier in Hebrew than reading, which is the opposite way around to me with most languages. Speaking and listening helped my reading so much. I'm now very out of practice and mostly gave up on trying to follow the more in depth bits of Hebrew in this thread because my brain was protesting :D I got to the point where I could have a lively conversation in Hebrew but I haven't got to the point of being even a semi fluent reader yet.
