This is the 4th week running that my diamond league group has contained at least one of my Duolingo "friends" (mutual followers). I only have 37 of them. One of them appeared in the same group (of 20) two weeks in succession. In one week there were 2 friends. The statistical odds against this must be huge. And in all my years it never happened before. So is it part of the algorithm now? Has anyone else seen this?

Re: Friends in Diamond league group
For this to occur your friends need to be
located in the same time zone (or an adjacent one starting the league at the same moment.);
Next, your friend needs to operate on the same platform as you: DL app or DL website;
Next your friend and you need to have a comparable score in the previous league;
Finally, your friend and you need to start the new league around the same hour of the day on Monday.
If you both use a streak freeze on Monday, the odds are higher because less users start on Tuesday. Hence leagues fill more slowly and the time window for entering the same league is wider.

I also recently had it several times in a row and immediately assumed that it was a new algorithm.
At the moment any other new features stay unnoticed by me because I'm in "private mode".

Re: Friends in Diamond league group
That's normal. It's happened to me, too. Duolingo doesn't just mix and match. Imagine you earned 700 XP in one week and your friend earned 670 XP, then you have a higher chance of getting into a league than another friend who earned 10,000 XP in a week. Duolingo keeps track of your progress. It is not uncommon that you get into a league with friends.

Re: Friends in Diamond league group
And as a footnote: though many of my 'Duolingo friends' are in a diamond league, the few real-life friends among them usually aren't. They might have quit the app alltogether. However, if they are in diamond, they mostly use a different platform (I use the DL website). Hence I might find a 'DL friend' in my league, but never a real-life friend.
