SAOB (svenska.se) mentions also the verb "att kritikera", which has the second "k" much like in the noun "kritik"
(NL: kritiek, FR: critiquer) whereas the English "criticism" has the s-sound instead of the "k"
So but the newer spelling seems/needs to be "kritisera"

In fact, this is a good example (there are so many others) where the meaning of a sentence can be translated, the "message" conveyed into the target language, yet in so many ways. Often the "nuances" are acceptable, on other occasions, and in other contexts, it may not be suitable to use one or other variant.

The overall policy of DL is to accept really the variant which is the closest to a literal word-by-word translation. it's in some way understandable, as they want us, you, to learn some vocabulary, verb tenses, and best standard word order.

In that sense, your variant "Politiker får ofta kritik för dåliga beslut." should be translated using the verb "to get (criticism)" rather than "are being criticized"
And "Politicians are often criticized for bad decisions." should then be "Politiker är ofta kritiserat för däliga beslut."

of course, this "strict" attitude of DL then leads to so many people complaining about "my sentence should have been accepted" ... because "it means the same thing"

From what I understood on the old duolingo forums, especially comments made on the norwegian version by course maker Deliciae, there was a limit in the Duolingo system itself that only let them accept X number of translations. That's why, when she continued to develop the norwegian tree, she'd ask us natives to go through it and help her by reporting errors and such before a vast majority of learners would get to the new content.

Apparently it was built up with accepting translations word by word, instead of the whole sentence by itself. Which can make it very difficult when a word changes meaning due to the sentence being sarcastic, for instance.
This was obviously a bigger problem the more advanced content you got to.
