Post by buho »

I know this is too much to ask. but how about a forum for sharing funny sentences by Duolingo? Something along the lines of /r/shitduolingosays or this twitter profile.
I totally understand in case it's not desirable/feasible.

Nothing is too much for us from Duome Team, and we like FUN.

They are funny indeed! stay tuned, as we, from Duome Team, are in the process of "doing something" with duolingo sentences. Can't say exactly what, but it will be funny too ;-)

On the other hand, why - give us a few good reasons - have a third place to post those, as those two above are already a nice collection ;-)

But, you did well to put it on the requests page..so stay tuned.

thanks for the response, Basler Biker. I'm eagerly waiting to see what duome will come up with.
As for the reasons, twitter and reddit are completely nonfree whilst duome uses phpbb, which is licensed under GPL. Also, unlike the former two, duome's main focus is to provide a forum for language learners.
These are a couple good reasons I can think of.

Edited: Here's what I thought at first was a funny one! אני אוהב לאכול מברשות שיניים. I love eating toothbrushes. I knew a little kid who ate toothpaste, but toothbrushes? Must have some form of pica. From reading the comments in the SD and looking at the link there, it is actually usually a psychiatric condition. :(

Maybe we could a have thread with funny sentences, I'm sure Basler Biker will come up with something. Personally I hope it won't have poop in the title!

It gets much worse in the Hebrew course:
"רציתי לאכול ילד אבל החלטתי לאכול ביצה."
Translation: I wanted to eat a child but I decided to eat an egg.
I'm truly relieved!

Truly dreadful, does DL condone cannibalism? Sometimes I wonder what they do think is okay!

There are no cannibals anymore... they ate the last one many years ago. ;-)

Now I don't have the exact English translation, with possible alternatives/variants, but it could be a quite normal sentence ...Again as too often with DL, it's the missing context which makes sentences funny, or less...

If the sentence were like "I asked a child for food, but decided to eat an egg" ... So the hungry man on the street sees a child enjoying chips and a drink, and asks for some food, but gets a no, and decides to rob a bird's nest... ???

Some people on duolingo were experts and got famous for providing a particlular context in which every duolingo sentence becomes normal suddenly... ;-)

Nope, this is not what the Hebrew sentence means. There's no context in which this sentence can be normal. Duo's translation is accurate this time. Well, except that Hebrew is a gendered language, so it has no ungendered word for "child". The Hebrew sentence actually says "boy".

Is the Hebrew word for human child the same as for animal babies? Maybe the author just wants some lamb or veal, not a human child??? (Quechua has that problem, wawa can be either human or animal baby, which can lead to some really scary mistranslations)

No, lamb and veal have distinct words in Hebrew. Actually English has that problem too: "kid" can be either a baby goat or a child. But Hebrew has a distinct word for a baby goat = גדי = "gdi". The word ילד = "yéled" can only mean "boy".

Since this doesn't seem to be language specific and the scope seems to be quite narrow, I say it'd be enough to start a thread in a language subforum so anyone interested can contribute to it without it taking up space.

This was shared on Discord a few days ago: 100 of the best (and weirdest) duolingo sentences ever.

Some of the sentences featured (especially the Italian ones) are not as weird or memorable as one would expect from such a list.
"Le mie scarpe sono elettriche?" (Are my shoes electric?) would fit right in this list, but it's absent instead.

I do not know a word in Hungarian but I recall a very old Hungarian cartoon series for children titled "kockásfülű nyúl" about a flying rabbit that used its ears as propellers and flew from house to house like a small helicopter. Maybe this can explain the flying teachers thing.
