Your duolingo forum registration isn't automaticaly transferred to duome forum so in order to join duome forums you need to register with your existing or any other username and email; in any case it's advised that you choose a new password for the forum.

Here is the announcement for that archived on https://duolingo.hobune.stream/ They never actually gave a reason. Perhaps to be child-safe, only display positive comments, because they wanted revamp their website...

I'd guess it was mainly about potential legal liability - the possibility of somebody using the fora to do something illegal, or somebody suing for damages because of something that happened on the fora. etc. etc.

Lawyers and accountants and insurers don't like too many unpredictable variables.

I'd further guess that most specialised chat/fora firms such as facebook or whatever are now more like huge legal firms which use tech, rather than huge tech firms which use lawyers. :)
