Using mchat for discussions in French?

Post by MoniqueMaRie »

Are there any other French speakers/learners here who would like to meet at a fixed time for a chat in French?

I live in the time zone between Berlin, Rome, Madrid (Central European Summer Time). London and Lisbon have only one hour difference.

For me, Monday and Tuesday evenings between 7 and 9 pm are usually plannable times. I am just a learner of French who wants to use as many tools as possible to improve my French.

But I would also like to chat with people from other continents.
Can we find a time to come together?

Who would be participating?

Reason: another attempt to sticky this post, as I appreciate it.

I don't know mchat !
I could. Usually not on Tuesday, but in April it is possible for me any evening.

This is mChat - here at Duome on the upper right of this page:

Image

Click on that cloud icon to reveal that little menu.

Also, this is a very useful page to figure out time differences: https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/converter.html
interactive map: https://www.timeanddate.com/time/map/

Image

To calculate time differences, add absolute values of UTC numbers, for example:
Most of Europe is on UTC +2 (in the summer, in the winter it's +1)
Eastern Canada, eastern South America -3

2 + 3 = 5 hours difference (not 2 - 3)

...Of course different countries change from summer to winter time and some don't, and those who do, do so at a different date, so it is a bit of a mess! :D

In your profile the last point is: mchat

I activated it with the option to be shown on the front page (display on the index page = yes).
So when I log in I see if someone is chatting. Sometimes I've seen people chat in Spanish.

Salut Vero !

I think it will become a weekly thing, so every Monday at 7 pm European time/1 pm US Eastern time.

Maybe we could all arrange (or some/most of us) to do that tomorrow too... I'm in a break in my car driving now, I'll have a look when I finish, to see if there are some opinions...

hi!
It's easier for me to morrow, Tuesday. Next week I probably won't be available. Is "available" correct in this sentence ? :?

@vero: "available" is correct in your sentence.

@all of you: I will be in the mchat today, Tuesday, April-19, hoping to find many of you who want to chat in French. No plans for next week so far, so I probably will be able to keep the Monday date and try to really make it a weekly thing(!). But we can always try to find additional dates for French chatting.

@Stasia: thanks for trying to keep up the Monday date yesterday.

@Iliya: I have a special idea for the two of us: we could chat from time to time, me using French, you answering in German, we both correcting each other.

If you have not found it yet: Did you read Stasia's explanation at the beginning of this discussion? There you can also find the time zones.

And: you have to activate mchat in your profile (last point of your User control Panel)

I hope you will be able to join us - the last three Mondays we have been chatting at the time announced in the beginning: 7pm for central europeans besides UK and Portugal

It's 1 PM Eastern Time (East Coast), 11 am if you are on Mountain Time (e.g. Arizona, Colorado).

We can change the day and/or the hour - it's not set in stone - or add another hour, but bear in mind it has to be something that works on both sides of the Atlantic, so not too late at night in Europe.

La semaine prochaine, et par conséquent le lundi 23 mai, je serai sans wifi. Si je n'apparais pas sur le chat lundi soir, il est possible que je n'ai pas pu me procurer la seule connexion Lan de la maison.

Next week, and consequently also on Monday 23.5, I will be without wifi. If I don't show up at the chat on Monday evening, I might not have been able to secure the only lan connection available in the house.

If I shouldn't show up: please keep the French chat going without me

Maintenant, je suis retournée dans une maison avec wifi.
Demain soir, je voudrais chatter français encore une fois.

Sujet: une semaine sans wifi ;) (?)

Now I am back to a house with wifi.
Tomorrow evening I would like to chat French again
