BTW, listening to songs in Ukrainian while looking at synchronized text (on Spotify for instance) is veeery helpful for me as another learning tool, because I still find it hard to get used to Cyrillic – and welp, it kind of forces me to read real fast

Hello, I have two grammatical questions regarding songs.
(I'm not going to write in Ukrainian this time, but you may answer me in this language, I understand almost everything, I'm just not at the level to freely express myself )

1. In Vivianne Mort's Пташечка there is a line:

   а ти не плач,
   Бо я ж не плачу

   What does 'ж' stand for? I thought it's an abbreviated 'already', but honestly, I couldn't find any confirmation anywhere, Google search wasn't helpful at all...

2. While listening to songs of Олександр Пономарьов I noticed that he usually pronounces 'Я' as 'zhia' and I'm wondering, is it a common thing? Or is it maybe to make pronunciation easier while singing opera-like parts (something like changing the pronunciation of English 'e' to 'i/ee' on the higher tones)?

It is not a word that can be translated, but rather gives emphasis on what's being said.

a few more comments on 'ж':

without it, it would be a simple statement - я не плачу - I don't cry

a very popular equivalent would be "because" (and/or "for instance", "in my own turn") - when it's an answer to something, as in the example above

• я ж не плачу = because I (for instance, in my own turn) don't cry:

• чому я тобі подобаюсь? - why do you like me?
• ти ж гарна - because you are beautiful

but it can also be used in a phrase which wouldn't be the answer, but the leading part of the phrase:

• ти ж гарна, ....
  or
• ти ж знаєш, ...

here the first part would be followed by a comma and ... an explanation why it matters or what does it mean

• you're beautiful indeed (and you know it), so...
  or
• you know it yourself (of course you know),... everything will be fine

"ж" is here to emphasize the idea and add a flavour similar to english indeed, for sure, etc. (though it's not a literal translation - these words have their direct equivalents, while "ж" is only a kind of a "flavour"
