It was, and is, just a matter of time for them to completely disappear.

Good thing you saved a lot of the Italian ones! I might start saving more Hebrew ones.

Thanks! Yes, and a relatively large number of them already have useful (hopefully) comments.

Yes, they are, however…

  1. they are somewhere else, not here
  2. they still have a lot of useless texts/comments
  3. they cannot be updated (no comments, no questions, no nothing)
  4. I don't know for certain, but I don't think that the site has a search function

I just checked and and the SD numbers 14000000 to 46800000 aren't all saved. For example:
"¿Por qué no dibujaste nada?" isn't saved. https://duolingo.hobune.stream/comment/26638643 gives an error 404.
So we still have to save those.

@gmads Maybe I'll be crucified too! I hope the new posts not selecting the sentence bot helps in this case, but if everyone start doing it, we might have to remove the sentence bot from both feeds and just access it via a language feed for sentences we might be interested in. Maybe the extension will still work even if the sentence discussion button doesn't? I think so, I'm not quite sure if it is necessary to save all the sentences right now considering this. Knowing Duolingo, they will remove the sentence discussions themselves at some point after they have hidden them. That will make this site and others way busier.

Don't have any sentence discussions either. Boohoo!

I don't think you need to worry: being a global moderator and all makes you like a Goddess on Olympus ;) Let us mere mortals worry :D

Regarding the use of the Duome button (script) I only see one problem: the sentence is thrown into the Unanswered Sentence Discussions forum, which is equivalent to throwing a corpse into a common grave, that is, once inserted in said forum it is not an easy task to list and go through only those sentences of a particular language, since the forum does not allow you to search for sentences by language. It is not a pleasant task, but what I have been doing gradually is "moving" all the Italian sentences to their respective forum.

Wait what? I somehow expected the script to migrate the comments too? So these are not even unanswered sentence discussions since no questions were migrated.. but why then at all? To copy their sentences (what this represents now)?

According to that Reddit post linked on the previous page they removed them entirely for some users, so we're lab animals again.

No, it doesn't.

Only the sentence itself, the translation, and the link to the forum are included, as you can see here. There are, of course, cases where either or both of the last pieces of information may be missing.

Somehow this surprised me, I always thought the entries I looked at here were just unanswered (for real, on Duolingo side..). The questions, discussions and hints were the most valuable part of it from my point of view.

Well, having only the sentence allows for a cleaner thread with real useful comments and answers. There were countless DL threads with countless posts asking what had already been answered or with the classical "me too."

Once a particular DL sentence is copied in here one could check the corresponding DL SD to also copy in here any useful comments :)

Actually I am a mere mortal! Even moderators can make mistakes!

As for whether people know it's me generating Hebrew sentences, that depends on whether I comment on them or they read this! Other people generate Hebrew sentences too.

Agree, these were annoying to filter, but it's way easier to remove them than to collect useful content from the scratch. For web users this workflow might be feasible, but for app users it's not, it's at least lacking a lot of usability. And to me the major advantage was rather to find already existing additional information than the possibility to request everything from scratch bc one usually gets an answer about two levels too late. So not even finding existing information would make it even less likely for me to look sth up here. Though there are sure learners out there for which this workflow works.

sigh - this means we need to rush to pull off from sentence discussions the gems of information for language learning that are in them.

I don't know how to do this.

Thanks for this heads up @Helge. .

I am not sure how to handle this.

Their parsing is a bit more tricky and the user data needs to be mapped to a dummy account or something like this, but it's basically not too difficult. Legal considerations might be an issue.

Most SDs are useless. I posted in October 2022, in Spanish, ¿De verdad merecen la pena las discusiones sobre frases?
But you can save them as JSON files in your device. A wider explanation at Saving the messages of Duolingo forums
You don't need to rush to post them.

It depends on the course I think. Some courses (most of those I follow) have high quality discussions so it is going to be a big loss.

Your trick to retrieve the discussions in json format could be used to automatically port the [yet] available discussions into doume. Perhaps it would make more sense than dealing with tons of "unanswered sentence discussions".

It is not only my opinion, you can read

If you don't split the acceptable and good answers from the most useless and even counterproductive ones, you only will waste your time.
A much better idea is to look up in a good dictionary.
A discussion about a word or a sentence could be good only if native people or experts in the language post interesting nuanced views.
And translations are sometimes not so easy to do. You need context, not a simple phrase.

I often use the sentence discussion button to hear the sentence said out loud, as the audio for some sentences is missing in some of the lesson items. I would miss being able to do that, especially in Arabic.

No. It's always been there for me, at the time of the sentence discussion there's a little audio icon you can click on to hear the sentence repeated out loud.

Hebrew doesn't have TTS. The only way to learn how to say words is via listening to the audio recording or reading the transliteration. Sometimes this can only be accessed via discuss.

Due to this problem, is there a way to archive audio? Is that legal to do? I think I will submit a bug report. This doesn't just affect my grammar skills but the actual pronunciation of words. Most of the Hebrew discuss is good quality unlike some of the more popular languages which have pages of stuff.

As I did some courses based on French or German as well as English I'd say: based on French or German the discussion was - when it wasn't the beginning of the course - not as full of trivialities as the one based on English.

Also in the less popular languages f.e. EN-PL the discussion was very language related

The worst I found were the beginner discussions in EN-IT. There I quickly switched to FR-IT.
So: I miss the sentence discussions - but not everywhere

Native :de: / using :uk: / learning :fr: :cn: :it: / once learnt Image / trying to understand at least a bit :poland:
