Sentence Discussion? No More!

Looks as though there are no sentence discussions, at least the option on the drill screen is not visible:

There are also sentences without discussion button. That's not new. But the mayority still has this button. However, you can only view and read the discussions at the moment, they are locked.

According to KevinR..., this is a temporary thing.

The trouble now is... with no more forum, Kevin won't be able to update about this either.

I am not sure. I can see the sentence Discussion as well as the button to it.
But i could be depend on the course and the exact exercise. I saw already month ago some sentences without a button to a sentence discussion.

"Táim."

The only questions that I don't see a Discuss link are ones that ask you to match words or learn new ones; it makes sense as they're technically not sentences.

This is in the FAQ on Duolingo, I don't think the sentence forums will ever change from read only.

"What will happen to Sentence Discussions?

Sentence discussions will remain online as read-only. Previously, Android and web users were able to participate in sentence discussions. However, they are now read-only across all platforms. We highly encourage you to continue to ‘report’ translations and exercises by tapping the flag icon. Learn more here. Our team monitors these reports and we appreciate your help."

I have gotten emails from Kevin before. He used to answer the support emails.

If you email to 'support@duolingo.com' and add to the title field, "Attention; Kevin " you may well be able to get in contact with him.

Thanks so very much.
Keep up the good work.

He's pretty active on the Discord server. He answers people's questions there. That's the fastest way to reach someone with inside knowledge (?) on things.

I only made a Discord account so I can see if there's any development on the SDs situation or ask a question.

The same one on Duolingo. In fact, the first instruction for newcomers on the Duolingo server is to change your username in the server (your global one stay unchanged) to match your DL handle.

I had a feeling that was a reason behind the lock, but it doesn't engender much confidence. :|

Here it says that sentence discussions are "currently" read-only:

https://support.duolingo.com/hc/en-us/a ... ement-FAQ-

Let's see how that plays out. I have always wondered how it is supposed to make sense to turn off the forum but keep the sentence discussions.

I suppose it makes a certain amount of sense (albeit not a lot) for learners to be able to see earlier learners’ questions and the mods’ or other users’ answers and explanations. But to make it impossible for anyone to ask for grammar or vocabulary help at all, is just rotten.

For anyone still unaware of this, we now have sentence discussions on this forum!

luo-ning wrote: Sun Apr 24, 2022 9:03 pm

OK, this is now in open beta. Expect bugs!

How to install:

  1. Install Tampermonkey
  2. Restart your browser
  3. Go to ext/luoning/sentencediscussions/styles/ ... pt.user.js and install the userscript
  4. You should now see a "DUOME" button next to most Duolingo challenges after you solve them, like this:
    duome_btn.PNG
  5. When you click it, a topic will be created in the Sentence Discussions subforum that you can reply to, or if one already exists for that sentence, you'll be taken there.

Note that not every sentence has a translation or a corresponding discussion on the Duolingo forum, which is why you won't always see those elements.

For me, the sentence discussions aren’t even loading anymore. They haven’t loaded yesterday, or today.

Has anyone noticed the same thing, or are they acting normal for you all?

Most of them still work for me, but some of them don't seem to exist. When I try to click on the "Discuss" link on some sentences, it tries to open in a new tab before closing by itself.
