Duolingo dictionary

Post by Corinnebelle »

Edit: This feature is no longer functioning on Duolingo.

Does anyone have dictionary codes for the Duolingo dictionary. I don't know how to access it except by bookmark.

Hebrew https://www.duolingo.com/dictionary/he
Swahili https://www.duolingo.com/dictionary/sw
French https://www.duolingo.com/dictionary/fr [This appears to be the default]
Finnish https://www.duolingo.com/dictionary/fi
Klingon https://www.duolingo.com/dictionary/kl
Latin https://www.duolingo.com/dictionary/la
Spanish https://www.duolingo.com/dictionary/es
Korean https://www.duolingo.com/dictionary/ko
German https://www.duolingo.com/dictionary/de
Hungarian https://www.duolingo.com/dictionary/hu
Ukraine https://www.duolingo.com/dictionary/uk
Italian https://www.duolingo.com/dictionary/it
Yiddish https://www.duolingo.com/dictionary/yi
Russian https://www.duolingo.com/dictionary/ru

This is what I got so far with guess work. The dictionary is a window into the sentence discussion at the moment. You can click on related discussions and it will bring up sentences that use the word.

Personally I like the dictionary if I know I've learnt a word but can't remember it or need the spelling.

Note: The dictionary can be accessed from the events more... drop down menu. I was not aware of this when I wrote this. It will adjust automatically to your current language when used this way.

What is the address bat on the url? Do you have to have the code displaying to see this code? Simply switching flags for me doesn't seem to display it.

Sorry, I edited your post instead of mine. The address bar is where you type the links to pages. URL = Uniform Resource Locator. A link to a web page basically...

Thanks for clearing that up, I have never heard of an address bat before, but then I aren't very computer savvy!

When I change flags it switches to "learn" in that language, but I don't see the code for the language.

Batmail is probably a great idea! Flying delivery service!

I ever so hope Duolingo is seeking to continue to make its dictionary available.
I see it as a such a wonderful educational resource.

Thanks all for posting these links.

I think the dictionary was doomed after they removed access to it through learn and stories.

I am ever so sad to read this, and experience it.

This also means a LOT of work for me as I will need to rewrite a lot of posts here on these forums.
Though the worse thing is that this resource is no longer available for assisting learning.

Thanks community for also keeping me up to date on issues such as this.

I filled out a bug report about it. Noticed it Saturday morning. Two things happened at the same time-- the dictionary links bounced me to the app, and I lost the lingot that I was awarded for meeting my daily quota on the browser. I assumed both quirks were related & considered both bugs. Today when I hit my daily quota I got no message but I did get an award of a lingot. The conclusion I drew from this is that they're still trying to figure both things out. I use links to individual words-- like these four for example.

risquer

guichet

Saperlipopette! Those links just take me to learn. I looked at a sentence discussion to see if it would link to the dictionary, but all those links on the words are gone. :( I wonder if this means they are finally revamping sentence discussions? And why would they remove the dictionary to do that?

Good questions Corinnebelle >

It may also be an inkling to come - that all the sentence discussions will also be wiped out.
And I feel the time clock of the extinguishing of these resources that have been created over years is now set to be turned off as well.

I have NO inside knowledge. This is just something a dark part of mind is warning me about.

So if you wish to save any of the great wisdom shared in the sentence discussions, I would suggest now is the time to do it.

I myself continue to shudder and be shocked by this.

Something I need to also find time to get out of - and start ... if I am able to save and create.

This is such a sad year.

The main advantage of the Duolingo dictionary over an on-line translation tool is that for any given word it has references to course sentences where that word is used.

With the dictionary now removed after the forums, I 'm wondering what is going to be next. Duolingo courses that cost too much maintenance for any given number of learners?

If something works, it needs to be modified. If anything breaks down or starts malfunctioning because of those modifications, it will be removed: remember the estimated learning time to the next owl upgrade, the 'immersion' experiment ...

Ever less DL learners are going to be tempted to take a PLUS subscription. Decent quarterly results of DUOL are likely to be a one-off event.
I am wondering how long it will take for the DUOL stock to get into a tailspin.

This is what lured me into using Duolingo's dictionary. It has all the sentences taught for each lesson in a course, especially when you do lessons they don't bring out all the sentences and only take out a few of them.

I am angry that they removed the dictionary. It is extremely difficult to find sentences now especially with the forums removed. Duolingo never fails to disappoint and alienate its users. They never explained why they removed the dictionary and why the links to the dictionary were removed from the website and words in the sentences except forums. They completely stayed silent on it.

Maybe the plan to remove the forums was planned last year? The dictionary was tied to the sentence discussions which were part of the forums.

Another feature removed. I am not surprised at this point.

Duolingo in the past: immersion, tiny cards (flashcards), forums, sentence discussions, language clubs, a good number of new courses released every year, activity stream, volunteers answering questions, dictionaries...

Duolingo today: a lot of cartoons, hearts, invasive advertising on the app, abandoned courses, leagues, a path with no choice to study what you want...

I've been using Duolingo since 2014 and I am sorry to say that I don't recognize it anymore.

I found this Anki add-on on 23rd of May that uses Anki to look up Duolingo dictionary results a few days after the dictionary was removed, it was able to retrieve example sentences even if the dictionary no longer exists. But when I used it again two days ago it no longer retrieves example sentences, and only the definitions are still there.

I wonder if someone has a full archive of the whole Duolingo dictionary.
