Fue vs Era - talking about origin

Post by bar999 »

When talking about somebody's origin (for example "she was from Spain") do you say "ella era de España" or "ella fue de España"?

"Era" is the imperfect third person singular of "ser" and "fue" is the preterite.

I'd go with "era," because you're referring to a long and indefinite period of time, not something like "ella fue de España por diez años," which would be grammatically correct, but logically impossible.

Ella era de España.

The difference is that "era" corresponds to the imperfect past tense and "fue" to the simple past perfect tense.
