[GUIDE] How do I post Images ? : The basics

![Duo37]( I have had people ask me, how do I post my own image/photo up on Duolingo.
And while I have, some years ago, posted some other advice on posting images, these do not seem to be explaining it adequately, to assist all people. Different explanations suit different people at different times.
So here is a new one that hopefully may help.

Let's say you wish to share a screen shot, such as the post here.

![](
So to show your unique image up on a Duolingo forum, you need to put (host) this the image up on the web,
Currently I mainly use imgur.com . Though there are lot of others to choose from as well.
To read about other image hosting sites, perhaps check out : https://www.wix.com/blog/photography/20 ... ing-sites/
Or perhaps others would like to recommend some?

To copy an image to imgur

Step 1. Copy your image to your clipboard.

If you are using a Windows platform on Windows 10 :
- Hold down the "windows key" on your keyboard. ![](
- Plus/at the same time hold down your left hand shift key
- Plus/at the same time press the letter "s"
i.e. " ![]( " + "SHIFT" + "s"
This brings up the snipping tool, that you can then click and drag your mouse over the image you wish to save to your clipboard.

Step 2. Copy your image to imgur.com

With your image in your "clipboard" :

  • Go to imgur : i.e.   https://imgur.com/upload
  • Hover your mouse over "Drop Images here", and hold the "ctrl" + "v" key down. This should paste your image to imgur.
    i.e.  ![](

Step 3. Copy the imgur address for your image

Hover your mouse over your image, and press your right mouse button. This should give you a pop up window, which includes the option "Copy image address"
![pop up window](

Move your mouse over "Copy image address", and click
You now have the imgur internet address for this image in your clip board.

  • Now, open your comment in the Duolingo forums, where you want to share your image.
When you have the Duolingo Forum text box open, hold the "ctrl" + "v" key down. This should paste your clipboard imgur address to the text box.
It should look something like :
    https://i.imgur.com/hiZTUjv.png
Though the address will be different code/numbers, that are unique to your post/image.

  • Now, go to the start of this address, and add : ![](

  • And at the end of this address, add )

  • Your address to reference your image should now look something like : ![][(https://i.imgur.com/hiZTUjv.png)

  • When you save your comment, the Duolingo text editor should now be able to render your image for others to see.

Given that images (and especially GIFs) may affect other users' accessibility, I recommend considering the issue when choosing to post:

  • Large images that have a white background can dazzle users that need and use a dark mode. Gifs that flash too fast can cause issues such as seizures and migraines to those sensitive to the matter.
There are plenty of free websites that allow you to convert your images to be dark mode compatible, by changing the background to transparent. Here's one example:

  • https://www.online-image-editor.com - and here are my step by step, image accompanied instructions → Duolingo internal link

  • Commonly used GIFs ➜ dark mode compatible

For an image to be rendered (be produced) in the Duolingo forums it needs to be in raster image formats, of "gif", "jpeg / jpg", or "png", to the best of my knowledge.

i.e.

GIF : Graphics Interchange Format

![GIF logo](https://media4.giphy.com/media/Id66GDfKacJzxSvhqV/giphy.gif)

JPEG / JPG : Joint Photographic Experts Group

[![JPEG logo](https://jpeg.org/images/jpeg2000-logo.png)](https://jpeg.org/
)
![JPEG logo](https://jpeg.org/images/jpeg2000-logo.png)

PNG : Portable Network Graphics

Imgur saves images in PNG format.

Suggestions on advantages to log in

With IMGUR, I prefer to log into my account, so that I can see the images I have posted.
If you do not log into imgur, I find it harder to keep a reference back to images I have posted.
Another advantage of logging into imgur to post your image, is that you can also resize your image, such as to make it smaller.

  • If you hover your mouse over right corner of your image, a pop up box will appear, with ...
Press on these three dots ..., and another pop up box will appear, and in the options, select : "Edit Image"
    ![](

  • This will give you something like this:
    ![](
And allow you to crop/resize and even rotate your image.

Language note:

These three little dots in a row ( … ) are called an ellipsis. Also referred to as meatball menu.
The term ellipsis comes from the Greek word meaning “omission”.
And in text, it is used often to indicate that some details are left out.

On the internet, they are also used to indicate there are more menu options that you can check out.

When the dots are one on top of the other, i.e. ⋮
Also referred to as a kabab menu.

Though it often uses dashes, like ☰

This menu option can be referred to as "a hamburger" 🍔 or a trigram.
