Chapter 12a - Haluaisin kupin teetä, kiitos

Kaisa, Yvonne ja James ovat Kuopion kauppahallin kahvilassa.
Kaisa: Rättänä näyttää hyvältä.
Yvonne: Minulla on vähän nälkä. Otan karjalanpiirakan.
James: Minullakin on nälkä. Taidan syödä voileivän.
Kaisa: Minä tarjoan. Mitä juotte?
Yvonne: Haluaisin kupin teetä, kiitos.
James: Minä otan limonadia.
Kaisa: Selvä. Minä otan vähän kahvia.

Myyjä: Päivää.
Kaisa: Päivää.
Myyjä: Haluatteko, että lämmitän karjalanpiirakan?
Kaisa: Ei tarvitse. Onko teillä munavoita?
Myyjä: Totta kai. Se tekee yhteensä 12 euroa.
Kaisa maksaa pankkikortilla.
Myyjä: Kiitos ja hyvää päivänjatkoa.
Kaisa: Kiitos samoin.

Kaisa, Yvonne ja James istuvat kahvilassa.
Kaisa: Hm. Rättänä on herkullista.
Yvonne: Mitä syömme päivällisellä?
Kaisa: Minun tekee mieli kalaa. Taidan ostaa lohen.
Yvonne: Voisimme ostaa samalla kalakukon huomiseksi.
James: Minä en ole koskaan maistanut kalakukkoa.
Yvonne: Se maistuu hyvältä.

Harjoitus 1

Vastaa kymyksiin. - Answer the questions.
• Where are Kaisa, Yvonne and James?
• What does Kaisa eat?
• Why do Yvonne and James choose savoury food?
• What does Yvonne drink?
• What will the trio have for dinner?
• What will they eat tomorrow?

Harjoitus 2

Etsi seuraavat ilmaisut tekstistä. - Find the following expressions in the text.

• Rättänä looks good.
• I am a bit hungry.
• I think I will eat a sandwich.
• I am buying.
• OK.
• Of course.
• I feel like having fish.
• It tastes good.

"kalakukko" translates as fish-purse, because "kukko" (rooster) is an archaic form of "kukkaro" (purse). There's a vegetarian version, lanttukukko (made with rutabaga instead of fish).

Rye is the only one of the four staple grains (barley, oats, wheat, and rye -- listed in order of production in Finland) that can be grown in most of the country (the climate in the north being too harsh for the other ones). Back in the 1800s, wheat was a luxury ingredient and something common people would only eat at festive occasions. Most of the oats and barley grown is apparently used for animal fodder, which rye isn't suitable for. So rye (bread) has been and still is a corner stone of the Finnish diet.

The word kai has three meanings:

  1. It expresses possibility or assuming/guessing.
  2. It expresses disagreement, dibelief or scorn.
  3. It emphasizes the word it is attached to (or the whole expression).

Sometimes it can be hard to figure out the exact meaning of kai from a text, since it often depends on intonation. Word order can help a bit, if the writer knows how to use it.

The expression "totta kai" is fixed and means "of course". (Have you ever deconstructed the English expression?) Other ways of saying the same thing include: tietysti and tietenkin.

Kiitoksia selityksestä. "Kai" on epäilemättä hyvin mielenkiintoinen adverbi.

Pidätkö japanilaisen vihreän teen juomisesta? Pidätkö urheilemisesta? Pidätkö musiikin kuuntelemisesta? Tiedän, että tavallisesti pitää-verbi tarvitsee elatiivin, mutta en tiedä, mitä tapahtuu, kun käytetään verbiä.

Is there a tendency for the objects to be in partitive in the passive mood? It mostly depends on the verb (aspect) and not so much on whether it's passive or active voice. Aspect is used to differentiate between ongoing processes and actions that are or will be finished.

Nyt pestään ikkunat. (All of them, completely) Nyt pestään ikkunoita. (Ongoing process.) Pihalla arvotaan voittaja. (The winner is chosen outside. Happens now as we speak and then it's done.) Pihalla arvotaan voittajaa. (Happens now, but for some reason it takes time and therefore is an ongoing process.)

The most common sentence types are the following:

partitive object + verb (passive)

Autoa ajetaan. One drives a car./ A car is for driving.
Mansikoita syödään. One eats strawberries./ Strawberries are meant to be eaten.

verb (passive) + partitive object

Ajetaan autoa. Let's drive a car.
Syödään mansikoita. Let's eat strawberries.

accusative object + verb (passive)

Mansikat syödään. THE strawberries will be eaten.
Mansikat myydään. THE strawberries will be sold.

verb (passive) + accusative object

Syödään mansikat. Let's eat THE strawberries.
Myydään mansikat. Let's sell THE strawberries.

place/time + verb (passive) + partitive object

Torilla myydään mansikoita. There are strawberries sold at the market place.
Kesällä syödään mansikoita. One eats strawberries in the summer. (Because that is what you do in the summer)

verb (passive) + partitive object + place/time/manner
Mansikoita myydään torilla. Strawberries are sold at the market place. (And not at some other place.)
Mansikoita syödään kesällä. One eats strawberries in the summer. (And not in the winter, for instance)

verb (passive) + accusative object + place/time/manner
Mansikat myydään torilla. THE strawberries will be sold at the market place.
Mansikat syödään kesällä. THE strawberries will be eaten in the summer.

The combination place/time + verb (passive) + accusative object is not possible.

Chapter 12c - Haluaisin kupin teetä, kiitos

Akkusatiivin yksikkö - The accusative singular

The accusative singular looks like the genitive singular. If the partitive is used with uncertain amounts and continuous action, the accusative expresses certain amounts and finished action.

Syön mansikkaa. I am (in the process of) eating A strawberry.
Syön mansikan. I (will) eat THE (whole) strawberry.

Notice the way the English articles are used in the translations. In your average sentence (but not always), a word in the partitive is translated with a indefinite article and a word in the accusative with a definite article.

The genitive singular, as you remember, uses the same stem as the nominative plural. n is added to the stem. Let's go through the stem changes once more.

Astevaihtelu - Consonant gradation

k, p and t keep causing trouble! They trigger some changes in the stem disappearing or changing into other letters.

kk, pp and tt become k, p and t.

mustikka, mustikan
kuppi, kupin
tyttö, tytön

nk becomes ng.

• Helsinki, Helsingin
• kaupunki, kaupungin
• patonki, patongin

lt changes into ll.

• silta, sillan
• kulta, kullan
gold; darling

nt turns into nn

• lintu, linnun
• hinta, hinnan
cost, price

t between two vowels becomes d.

• pöytä, pöydän
• äiti, äidin
• setä, sedän
• koti, kodin
home

lk becomes l. Except when the lk is followed by i, in which case the consonant cluster turns into lj and the vowel changes into e.

jalka, jalan foot
veli, veljen

rk changes into r. Except when the rk is followed by i, in which case the consonant cluster changes into rj and the vowel changes into e.

märkä, märän wet
kurki, kurjen crane

k between two vowels disappears. In a few exceptions, the k becomes v or j.

• sika, sian
• aika, ajan
time
luku, luvun number; chapter
poika, pojan

p between two vowels usually (but not always) changes into v.

voileipä, voileivän
rapu, ravun crab, crayfish
lupa, luvan permission

mp changes into mm. If the mp is followed by i, the vowel changes into e.

kampa, kamman comb
lampi, lammen pond

ht changes into hd. If the ht is followed by i, the vowel sometimes changes into e.

vahti, vahdin guard
sanomalehti, sanomalehden
tähti, tähden star

Muunlaiset muutokset - Other types of changes

If the word ends in e, another e is needed to keep the first one company.

• perhe, perheen
• lentokone, lentokoneen

nen becomes sen

• hevonen, hevosen
• nainen, naisen

New words that end with i have no stem changes. In older words, i turns into e.

kahvi, kahvin
• tuoli, tuolin
• järvi, järven
lake
veitsi, veitsen
• suomi, suomen
• kieli, kielen

Words that end in si have the suffix den.

kuusi, kuuden six
• vesi, veden
• uusi, uuden
• vuosi, vuoden
year

Some exceptions.

• lasi, lasin
• keksi, keksin
• kuusi, kuusen
spruce

And yes, kuusi means both "six" and "spruce".

Chapter 12d - Haluaisin kupin teetä, kiitos

Persoonapronominien akkusatiivi - The personal pronouns in the accusative

• rakastaa - Rakastan sinua.
• ymmärtää - Ymmärrätkö minua?
• auttaa - Autamme lehmiä.
• odottaa - Odotatte junaa.

Some verbs can have both an accusative object and a partitive object.

Chapter 12e - Haluaisin kupin teetä, kiitos

-lla on - "To have"

Minulla on nälkä. I am hungry.
Minulla on jano. I am thirsty.
Minulla on kylmä. I am cold.
Minulla on kuuma. I am hot.
Minulla on kiire. I am in a hurry. I am busy.
Minulla on hiki. I am sweating.
Minulla on ikävä sinua. I miss you. (sinua is in the partitive)

As you remember, normally negations with this structure require the partitive.

• Sinulla ei ole hevosta.
• Hänellä ei ole pullaa.
• Miehellä ei ole siskoja.

However, the words listed above do not change in negations.

• Meillä ei ole nälkä.
• Meillä ei ole jano.
• Meillä ei ole kylmä.
• Meillä ei ole kuuma.
• Meillä ei ole kiire.
• Meillä ei ole hiki.
• Meillä ei ole ikävä heitä.
(heitä is in the partitive)

Taitaa - I think one will do something/is something

• taidan
• taidat

• hän taitaa
• taidamme
• taidatte

• he taitavat

Taitaa is combined with the first infinitive. This is the form I have given in Sanasto and along with conjugated forms. Examples: syödä, rakastaa, ottaa etc.

Taidan ottaa voileivän. I think I will take a sandwich.
Taidat juoda kupin kahvia. I think you will drink a cup of coffee.
Taidamme lähteä Kiinaan. I think we will go to China.
Naiset taitavat olla iloisia. I think the women are happy.

Tehdä - To make, to do

• teen
• teet

• hän tekee
• teemme
• teette

• he tekevät

Genetiivi + tekee mieli - The genitive + feel like having/doing something

• minun tekee mieli
• sinun tekee mieli
• hänen tekee mieli
• meidän tekee mieli
• teidän tekee mieli
• heidän tekee mieli

When one feels like having something, the object is in the partitive.

Minun tekee mieli voileipää.
• Siskoni tekee mieli kahvia.
• Asianajajan tekee mieli pullia.

When one feels like doing something, you need the first infinitive with this structure. When a structure has a genitive subject, the accusative object cannot resemble the genitive in singular. Instead, it looks like the nominative. One can also use a partitive object.

Minun tekee mieli syödä kalakukko. I feel like eating a (whole) kalakukko.
Minun tekee mieli syödä kalakukkoa. I feel like eating (some) kalakukko.
Hänen tekee mieli mennä Ruotsiin.

Näyttää - To look like

• näytän
• näytät

• hän näyttää
• näytämme
• näytätte

• he näyttävät

You need an ablative object with this verb.

Näytän isältäni. I look like my father.
Pilvi näyttää sialta! The cloud looks like a pig.
Opettaja näyttää tänään hyvältä. The teacher looks good today.

Maistua - To taste like something

This verb has only two forms in the present tense and it is used with things.

• se maistuu it tastes like
• ne maistuvat they taste like

You need an ablative object with this verb.

• Kahvi maistuu hyvältä.
• Korvapuusti maistuu herkulliselta.
• Ruoka maistuu pahalta.
The food tastes bad.

Maistaa - To taste
This verb is used with people.

• maistan

• maistat

• hän maistaa
• maistamme
• maistatte

• he maistavat

The object is usually in the partitive.

Maistan voileipää. I taste the sandwich.
Maistamme omenoita. We taste the apples.

The accusative is only used when a particular taste is found among other tastes.

Maistan kanelin. I taste the cinnamon (when eating a korvapuusti).
Maistatko pippurin? Do you taste the pepper? (when eating a dish with pepper in it)

Harjoitus 1

Käännä englanniksi. - Translate into English.

• Söpöllä koiralla on kylmä talvella.
• Hänellä on ikävä isäänsä.
• Putkimiehellä on hiki.
• Heillä on aina nälkä.
• Minulla ei ole jano.
• Onko sinulla kiire?
• Hän taitaa rakastaa sinua.
• Taidamme mennä Japaniin marraskuussa.
• Nuoret miehet taitavat olla vihaisia.
• Teen tuolin veljelleni.
• Teette voileipiä minulle.
• Minun tekee mieli kalakukkoa.
• Äidin tekee mieli lomaa.
• Maanviljelijän tekee mieli ostaa uusi auto.
• Pilvi näyttää linnulta.
• Poika näyttää isältänsä.
• Näytänkö komealta?
• Kaakao maistuu pahalta.

Harjoitus 2

sukuvirttä suoltamahan, lajivirttä laulamahan.

I have a good mind, take into my head,
to start off singing, begin reciting,
reeling off a tale of in kin, and singing a tale of kind.
The first lines of The Kalevala

Tämä kurssi näyttää loistavalta. Taidan oppia paljon vähä vähältä. Kiitos taas kurssista!

Kiitos paljon kauniista sanoista.

Note to learners: don't use Pilvi näyttää sialta as a phrase to impress your Finnish friends, you might just insult their friend :)

Also note that you may also see -lle used after verbs like maistua, näyttää and other impression verbs. With others it doesn't really matter which one you use but with maistua, it's recommended to use -lta when you talk about what something tastes like since -lle could be interpreted the other way around. So

• Ankka maistuu kanalta = Duck tastes like chicken
• Ankka maistuu kanalle = Duck tastes like chicken / The chicken likes the taste of duck

To clarify, Pilvi is also a woman's name.

Chapter 13b - Onko teillä punaisia mekkoja?

Vaatteita - Clothes

alushousut underpants
alusvaatteet underwear

kaulaliina, -liinat scarf (that covers the neck)
kenkä, kengät shoe
koru, korut piece of jewellery
käsine, käsineet glove
liivi, liivit waistcoat
mekko, mekot dress
paita, paidat shirt
pikkuhousut panties, knickers
puku, puvut suit
pusero, puserot blouse
• (ranne)kello, kellot watch
rintaliivit bra
sadetakki, -takit rain coat
silmälasit glasses
solmio, solmiot tie
sortsit shorts
sukka, sukat sock
sukkahousut tights
takki, takit coat
turkki, turkit fur coat
uimahousut bathing trunks
uimapuku, -puvut bathing suit
villapaita, -paidat pullover
villatakki, -takit cardigan
vyö, vyöt belt
yöpaita, -paidat nightgown

-lla/llä on päällä - To wear

This is going to be a bit messy. Päällä is a particle that needs a possessive suffix when it is used in structure like this.

Minulla on paita päälläni. I am wearing a shirt.
Sinulla on villapaita päälläsi. You are wearing a pullover.
Hänellä on villatakki päällänsä. He/she is wearing a cardigan.
Meilllä on mekot päällämme. We are wearing dresses.
Teillä on hameet päällänne. You are wearing skirts.
Heillä on takit päällänsä. They are wearing coats.

Notice that this structure is not as general as its English equivalent. Some - usually smaller - items need other structures. Here are some words you need to know first.

pää, päät head
jalka, jalat leg, foot
kaula, kaulat neck
ranne, ranteet wrist
käsi, kädet hand

These body parts appear in the inessive. You will also need the possessive suffix.

Minulla on hattu päässäni. I am wearing a hat. (I have a hat on my head.)
Minulla on housut jalassani. I am wearing trousers (on my legs).
Minulla on huivi päässäni. I am wearing a scarf (around my head).
Minulla kaulaliina kaulassani. I am wearing a scarf. (I have a scarf around my neck.)
Minulla on kello ranteessani. I am wearing a watch (around my wrist).
Minulla on kengät jalassani. I am wearing shoes. (I have shoes on my feet.)
Minulla on koru kaulassani. I am wearing a necklace.
Minulla on käsineet käsissäni. I am wearing gloves (on my hands).
Minulla on silmälasit päässäni. I am wearing glasses (on my head).
Minulla on sortsit jalassani. I am wearing shorts (on my legs).
Minulla on sukat jalassani. I am wearing socks (on my feet).
Minulla on sukkahousut jalassani. I am wearing tights (on my legs).

Heittää (pois)/riisua päältä - To take off

First of all, you need to know the verb heittää, to throw, to be able to use this structure.

heitän I throw
heität you throw
• hän heittää he/she throws
heitämme we throw
heitätte you throw
• he heittävät they throw

You can also use riisua, to take (clothes) off.

riisun I take my (clothes) off
riisut you take your (clothes) off
• hän riisuu he/she takes his/her clothes off
riisumme we take our (clothes) off
riisutte you take your (clothes) off
• he riisuvat they take their (clothes) off

The particle päältä needs the possessive suffix. The object, that is the piece of clothing, is in the accusative. The accusative plural looks like the nominative plural. We will practice this form more later on in this chapter. The word pois (away) is optional.

Heitän/riisun mekon (pois) päältäni. I take off my dress.
Heität/riisut puvun (pois) päältäsi. You take off your suit.
Hän heittää/riisuu takin (pois) päältänsä. He/she takes off his/her coat.
Heitämme/riisumme hameet (pois) päältämme. We take off our skirts.
Heitätte/riisutte jakut (pois) päältänne. You take off your jackets.
He heittävät/riisuvat paidat (pois) päältänsä. They take off their shirts.

Riisua can also be used without päältä. In these cases, you add the possessive suffix to the object, which is in the accusative that resembles the nominative (because of the possessive suffix).

Riisun paitani. I take off my shirt.
Hän riisuu takkinsa. He/she takes off his/her coat.

Again, some items require other structures. Many of them need the verb ottaa, to take, as their companion.

otan I take
otat you take
• hän ottaa he/she takes
otamme we take
otatte you take
• he ottavat they take

Again you need a body part that is part of the action in the phrase. This time use the elative and the possesive suffix. You do not need pois with heittää but it is necessary with ottaa. Riisua works with those structures that deal with legs or feet. You do not use pois with riisua.

Heitän/otan hatun pois päästäni. I take my hat off (my head).
Heitän/otan/riisun housut pois jalastani. I take my trousers off (my legs).
Otan huivin pois päästäni. I take my scarf off (my head).
Otan kaulaliinan pois kaulastani. It take my scarf off (my neck).
Otan kellon pois ranteestani. I take my watch off (my wrist).
Heitän/otan/riisun kengät pois jalastani. I take my shoes off (my feet).
Otan korun pois kaulastani. I take my necklace off.
Heitän/otan käsineet pois käsistäni. I take my gloves off (my hands).
Otan silmälasit pois päästäni. I take my glasses off (my head).
Heitän/otan/riisun sortsit pois jalastani. I take my shorts off (my legs).
Heitän/otan/riisun sukat pois jalastani. I take my socks off (my feet).
Heitän/otan/riisun sukkahousut pois jalastani. I take my tights off (my legs).

Laittaa/pukea päälle - To put on

To be able to use this structure, you need to know the verb laittaa, to put, to place.

laitan I put
laitat you put
• hän laittaa he/she puts
laitamme we put
laitatte you put
• he laittavat they put

You can also use pukea, to put (clothes) on.

puen I put my (clothes) on
puet you put your (clothes) on
• hän pukee he/she puts his/her (clothes) on
puemme we put our (clothes) on
puette you put your (clothes) on
• he pukevat they put their (clothes) on

Päälle is used with the possessive suffix. The object is in the accusative.

Laitan/puen mekon päälleni. I put my dress on.
Laitat/puet hameen päällesi. You put your skirt on.
Hän laittaa/pukee takin päällensä. He/she puts the coat on.
Laitamme/puemme paidat päällemme. We put our shirts on.
Laitatte/puette villatakit päällenne. You put your cardigans on.
He laittavat/pukevat uimapuvut päällensä. They put their bathing suits on.

And then to the exceptions. You need the illative and possessive suffixes with the body parts. The object is in the accusative. Pukea can be used with those expressions that deal with legs (but not with feet!).

Laitan hatun päähäni. I put my hat on (my head).
Laitan/puen housut jalkaani. I put my trousers on (my legs).
Laitan huivin päähäni. I put my scarf on (around my head).
Laitan kaulahuivin kaulaani. I put my scarf on (around my neck).
Laitan kellon ranteeseeni. I put my watch on (my wrist).
Laitan kengät jalkaani. I put my shoes on (my feet).
Laitan korun kaulaani. I put my necklace on.
Laitan käsineet käteeni. I put my gloves on (my hands).
Laitan silmälasit päähäni. I put my glasses on (my head).
Laitan/puen sortsit jalkaani. I put my shorts on (my legs).
Laitan sukat jalkaani. I put my socks on (my feet).
Laitan/puen sukkahousut jalkaani. I put my tights on (my legs).

Pukeutua - To get dressed

pukeudun I get dressed
pukeudut you get dressed
• hän pukeutuu he/she gets dressed
pukeudumme we get dressed
pukeudutte you get dressed
• he pukeutuvat they get dressed

Riisuuntua - To take all clothes off

riisuunnun I take all my clothes off
riisuunnut you take all your clothes off
• hän riisuuntuu he/she takes all his/her clothes off
riisuunnumme we take all our clothes off
riisuunnutte you take all your clothes off

Chapter 13c - Onko teillä punaisia mekkoja?

Ensimmäisen ryhmän verbien astevaihtelu - The consonant gradation of type 1 verbs

You should be now familiar with more than two dozens of type 1 verbs, so let's take a look at how they are conjugated. The last letter is dropped before personal suffixes are added. If the last consonant is not k, p or t, or is but is preceded by s, no stem changes occur. The combination hk also resists consonant gradation.

Asua - To live (in some place)

• asun
• asut

• hän asuu
• asumme
• asutte

• he asuvat

Muistaa - To remember

• muistan
• muistat

• hän muistaa
• muistamme
• muistatte

• he muistavat

However, if the last consonant of the stem IS k, p or t and is not preceded by s, stem changes take place. These changes do not occur in 3rd person singular and 3rd person plural.

kk changes into k. Compare: mansikka, mansikat.

Nukkua - To sleep

• nukun
• nukut

• hän nukkuu
• nukumme
• nukutte

• he nukkuvat

pp
turns into p. Compare: lippu, liput.

Oppia - To learn

• opin
• opit

• hän oppii
• opimme
• opitte

• he oppivat

tt
becomes t. Compare: tyttö, tytöt.

Odottaa - To wait

• odotan
• odotat

• hän odottaa
• odotamme
• odotatte

• he odottavat

Other verbs of this kind that should be familiar to you.

lämmittää - to heat up

näyttää - to look like

t becomes d. Compare: äiti, äidit.

Saapua - To arrive

• saavun
• saavut

• hän saapuu
• saavumme
• saavutte

• he saapuvat

And here are some stem changes you are not familiar with yet. Most of these verbs cannot be used yet because they demand structures that we have not learned yet. I am merely listing them so that you see that other types of stem changes exist. I would, however, like you to learn the verb sulkea, to close. Ignore the rest regarding active usage.

lk becomes l. Unless the stem ends in e, in which case lk changes into lj. Compare: jalka, jalat (foot), kylki, kyljet (side).

Chapter 13d - Onko teillä punaisia mekkoja?

Värejä - Colours

punainen, punaiset red
sininen, siniset blue
keltainen, keltaiset yellow
vihreä, vihreät green
oranssi, oranssit orange
violetti, violetit purple
harmaa, harmaat gray
valkoinen, valkoiset white
musta, mustat black
ruskea, ruskeat brown
tumma, tummat dark
vaalea, vaaleat light
kirkas, kirkkaat bright
vaaleanpunainen, vaaleanpunaiset pink
vaaleansininen, vaaleansiniset light blue
tummanpunainen, tummanpunaiset dark red

värikäs, värikkäät colourful
kirjava, kirjavat multi-coloured
mustavalkoinen, mustavalkoiset black-and-white
sinivalkoinen, sinivalkoiset blue-and-white

Notice that tumma means dark only when you are referring to colours. If you want to talk about the absence of light use pimeä.

Yö on pimeä. The night is dark.

Värikäs can refer to multi-coloured objects. It can, however, also refer to single-coloured objects, if the colour in question is bright or otherwise distinctive. Kirjava, on the other hand, always means colourful in the sense multi-coloured.

Sinivalkoinen is an important combination for the Finns and it is used to refer to all kind of things. The singer Katri-Helena, for instance, is often called sinivalkoinen ääni (the blue-and-white voice).

Jenni: Minkälaisen mekon haluat?
Sari: Pidän sinisestä. Tämä mekko on kaunis. Taidan sovittaa sitä.
Sari menee tiskille ja kysyy neuvoa.
Sari: Anteeksi. Missä sovituskopit (fitting rooms) ovat?
Myyjä: Sovituskopit ovat tuolla (over there).
Sari: Kiitos.
Jenni: No. Näyttääkö se hyvältä?
Sari: Tämä mekko ei istu minulle! Se on liian pieni.
Jenni: Minä etsin uuden mekon. Mikä sinun kokosi on?
Sari: 38.

Piru is the same thing as paholainen. There is also saatana, perkele and vanha vihtahousu. God has the same synonyms as other Christian cultures like Isä. Of course, in the Finnish pantheon there are all sort of gods and god-like creatures like Ukko, Tapio, Ilmatar, Aallotar etc.

Kiiti vastauksesta. Mulla on toinen kysymys. Miksi on partitiivi käytetään lauseessa "Tämä mekko on kokoasi"? Arvasin, koska mekko on jaollinen substantiivi, on täytyy käyttää nominatiivi.

Chapter 14c - Resepti

Imperatiivin yksikkö - The imperative singular

The imperative singular is used when you tell one person to do something.

The imperative singular of type 1 verbs is formed by using the stem of the verb with no add-ons.

• lukea - luen - Lue!
• nukkua - nukun - Nuku!
• sulkea - suljen - Sulje!

In most cases, the accusative object in singular looks like the genitive. However, in imperative sentences the accusative object resembles the nominative. The specific accusative forms of personal pronouns are used when personal pronouns are needed as objects.

Lue kirja! Read a book!
Muista minut! Remember me!
Anna kirja minulle! Give me the book!

Remember that certain verbs always require a partitive object.
Rakasta minua! Love me!
Auta meitä! Help us!

Chapter 14f - Resepti

Määrä - Amount

gramma gram
kilo(gramma) kilogram
desi(litra) decilitre
litra litre
sentti(metri) centimetre
metri metre

These words are followed by nouns (and adjectives) in the partitive.

kilo sipuleja/sipuleita kilogram of onions
litra maitoa litre of milk
metri kangasta metre of fabric (kangas, kankaat)

Remember that numbers (apart from one) and the word puoli are always followed by the partitive singular.

kaksi kiloa omenoita two kilograms of apples
kolme litraa vettä three litres of water
puoli metriä kangasta half a metre of fabric

Tusina, a dozen, is always followed by the partitive plural.

tusina mansikoita dozen strawberries

-llinen

You can form adjectives by adding -llinen to a noun. You need the stem used for the nominative plural to be able to do this. The adjective means "someone or something who has or owns something".

paita -> paidat -> paidallinen someone who has a shirt (on)
aviomies -> aviomiehet -> aviomiehellinen someone who has a husband

This is a relatively rare way of using this sort of a word. Adjectives like this are mainly used in formal language. It is, however, possible to use this word in other ways. First, sometimes words formed like this acquire an additional meaning. A good example of this is lapsellinen, which can mean both "someone who has children" and "childish". Second, adjectives like these can be used to express amount. You place it before a noun in the partitive. Sometimes, the word can be translated with an English adjective ending in -ful. Usually it is translated with full of or simply with of.

lusikallinen puuroa spoonful of porridge
lautasellinen keittoa plateful of soup
rekallinen porkkanoita lorry full of carrots
autollinen lapsia car full of children
mukillinen kahvia mug of coffee
pullollinen limonadia bottle of soda

Numbers (apart from one) and puoli are followed by the partitive singular.

puoli teelusikallista suolaa half a teaspoon of salt
kaksi mukillista teetä two mugs of tea

In some very rare cases, you can use a noun instead of the adjective. These are the ones we have learned so far.

kuppi kahvia cup of coffee
lasi mehua glass of juice
nippu kukkia bunch of flowers
pullo olutta bottle of beer (olut, oluet)
paketti sokeria package of sugar

Kupillinen, lasillinen, paketillinen and pullollinen are perfectly good words and are often used instead of the nouns. Nipullinen, however, has become very rare.

Olla täynnä - To be full of

Although you can use -llinen for even as large an object as rekka, you cannot (usually) use it with larger units like talo or kaupunki. Täynnä followed by the partitive is used in such cases.

Talo on täynnä tuoleja. The house is full of chairs.
Kaupunki on täynnä autoja. The city is full of cars.

Harjoitus 3

Käännä suomeksi. - Translate into Finnish.

• The shop is full of fruit and vegetables.
• I need a tablespoon full of ginger.
• Is there enough salt in the bread?
• They feel like having some muffins on Sunday.
• My uncle is a little bit childish.

• May I eat a ginger nut, pretty please!
• Vinegar tastes bad.
• Buy this mobile phone!
• Stand still or I will hit you!
• The author is writing her book by using a computer.
• You are writing letters with a pencil.

Let's compare: Paista seosta 15 minuuttia. vs. Paista seos kypsäksi. (until it's done.) So the adverbial makes the difference, that would seem to fit number 1, but the verb doesn't really fit there. Then I thought it's number 2, but after writing that explanation I thought it would be that seos is unspecified amount (so the first rule), but that doesn't seem to fit either. So... now I think it's number 2 again. This isn't easy, since there are so many rules influencing the choice and you can convey such small nuances with the choice of the case sometimes. And we natives usually have no idea why... so I depend on these rules just as much as you do in order to explain the phenomena to you. I just hope my notes would be better, but these are all the examples I have. I hope this still helps.

The original explanation: Do you remember my explanation about the object rules? Well this is the thing I just glossed over: how does the verb affect the object case/aspect. Now for those who know Russian this might seem familiar in some ways. (At least it helps me with Russian aspect!)

There are three kind of verbs that can get an object: partitive verbs, limited verbs and mixed verbs (my translations, I have no idea what these really are in English).

  1. Partitive verbs: these always get a partitive (except in rare cases). a) The verb describes a state that is changing without a clear end point (feelings/emotions Minä rakastan sinua.; thinking Minä ajattelen tätä asiaa.;back and forth movement Minä heilutan kättä.; the subject can't affect the result Minä odotan päätöstä.) N.B. If an endpoint or a result is given in the sentence, use total object (Leikkaan paidan riekaleiksi.=I'll cut the shirt into rags.) b) the verb describes an event without a significant, permanent or visible change (Kokeilen silmälaseja. Sovitan paitaa. Ajan autoa.) c) the event/action is very short and there's no change (touching Halaan sinua. Lyön sinua.)

  2. Mixed verbs: these can get both a partitive object and a total object, but it depends on the object. The verb describes events and actions that can be left unfinished. Whether the process is finished depends on the object. Compare: Luen nyt kirjaa. vs. Luen kirjan loppuun. Silitän paitaa. (right now) vs. Silitin paidan. (finished action)

  3. Limited verbs (total object): a) the subject acts actively (Hyväksyn sen.); an either-or state/black and white situation. Examples: Minä omistan auton. (permanent state... you either own or don't own a car as a state until the state changes.); Varas räjäytti kassakaapin.=The thief exploded the safe. (radical change in the state... if you buy a car, it's the same); Sytytän valot. (a momentary event OR an event that has no duration and can't be left unfinished=you either do it or don't do it, but there's no middle ground)

Harjoitus 1

b)

• Kaisa.
• It is slow.
• They use cocoa solids for the icing only.
• Cocoa solids and powdered sugar.

c)
Lämmitä, sekoita, levitä, paista.

• We need a litre of milk and a package of salt.
• The box/drawer is full of almonds and nuts.

Chapter 15a - Kävelkää suoraan eteenpäin

James ja hänen helsinkiläinen ystävänsä Pekka ovat Kuopiossa. He etsivät VB-valokuvakeskusta.
James: Voi itku! Olemme taas torilla.
Pekka: No, ainakaan emme ole enää eksyksissä!
James: Olet oikeassa. Yritän ajatella myönteisesti. Taidamme tarvita apua.
Pekka: Tuolla on infopiste. Siellä on varmaan karttojakin.

James: Päivää!
Pekka: Päivää!
Opas: Päivää. Miten voin auttaa?
James: Etsimme VB-valokuvakeskusta. Onko teillä karttoja?
Opas: Tottahan toki. Kas tässä. Näettekö tuon kadun kauppahallin takana? Menkää sinne ja kääntykää vasemmalle. Kävelkää suoraan eteenpäin, kunnes olette tuomiokirkon kohdalla. Kääntykää oikealle ja kävelkää kirkon editse Kuninkaankatua. Ylittäkää Minna Canthin katu ja VB-keskus on keltaisessa puutalossa Kuninkaankadun ja Minna Canthin kadun kulmassa.
Pekka: Siis ensin vasemmalle ja sitten oikealle.
Opas: Juuri niin.
James: Kiitos paljon.
Opas: Toivottavasti löydätte perille. Hyvää päivänjatkoa!
Pekka: Hyvää päivänjatkoa!

Chapter 15b - Kävelkää suoraan eteenpäin

Lokatiivisia postpositioita - Some locative postpositions

Postpositions used to express location are divided into three groups depending on what sort of question they answer: missä, mihin or mistä. The first group expresses being in some place, the second going to some place and the third coming from some place.

Postpositions are usually preceded by nouns, pronouns and adjectives (and numbers) in the genitive.

Takana, taakse, takaa - Behind

• Hän on kirjaston takana.
He is behind the library.
Hän menee kirjaston taakse. He goes behind the library.
Hän tulee kirjaston takaa. He comes from behind the library.

Edessä, eteen, edestä - In front of

• Hän on koulun edessä.
He is in front of the school.
Hän menee koulun eteen. He goes to the frontside of the school.
Hän tulee koulun edestä. He comes from the frontside of the school.

Vieressä, viereen, vierestä - Next to

• Hän on äitinsä vieressä.
He is next to his mother.
Hän menee äitinsä viereen. He goes (to stand/sit/etc.) next to his mother.
Hän tulee äitinsä vierestä. He comes away from the side of his mother.

Lähellä, lähelle, läheltä - Near, close to

• Hän on patsaan lähellä.
He is close to the statue.
Hän menee patsaan lähelle. He goes close to the statue.
Hän tulee patsaan läheltä. He is moving away from the vicinity of the statue.

Kohdalla, kohdalle, kohdalta - At an unspecified spot close to something

He is somewhere near the church.
Hän menee kirkon kohdalle. He goes (and stands/sits/etc.) somewhere near the church.

Pitkin - Along

Pitkin
follows nouns, pronouns and adjectives (and numbers) in the partitive.

Ajamme rantaa pitkin. We are driving along the beach.
Menette tätä tietä pitkin. You (plural) are taking this road.

With street names, you can leave out the postposition.

Well, this was my contribution to the Finnish forum (so far at least). I really wanted to save this slow Finnish which Zzzzz created years ago and which would have disappeared with the sunset of Duolingo's forum. I saw norrsken had saved and uploaded the lessons until 3f, but then suddenly stopped publishing...so I decided to keep on.

And now, Zzzzz, first of all I hope you are doing well. (I had read in the comments section (of Duo) something about some problems years ago...I hope it's all settled down. And I hope you are here in this forum too and, if you have more material to share with us, you can do it here now in the most organised way ;) I'm sure we'll all appreciate it.

Btw for those who know me from duolingo, I'm iliya (or Greg22bg, I don't know how I appear :P )
