What is the nominative case?
The nominative case is used to mark the subject of a clause. In other words, it is used for the person or object doing the action. Let's take some examples:
- I eat an apple - Яїм яблуко
I is in the nominative because it is doing the action of eating.
- The girl goes to school - Дівчина йде до школи
The girl is in the nominative because she is doing the action of going.
Pay special attention to this example!
- Діти – люди - The children are people
The direct object and the subject in a statement using the verb "to be" are both put in the nominative. Think of the long line "– " (called an em-dash) as being an equals sign. So Children = people.
How do we form the Nominative?
We don't exactly form the nominative so to say. The nominative is the basic/dictionary form of the word and we build up the endings from there. So that's one less case to remember! Woop! Woop!
