What is a Dative Verb?

A dative verb is a verb that puts its direct object into the Dative Case (The next post will be on it). This is unlike most verbs which use the Accusative case; known as Transitive Verbs. The verb we will use as an example is дзвонити meaning to call or to telephone.

Дзвонити - To phone

Here is the verb in the present tense. It is a conjugation II verb. You can read more on that here

  • Я дзвоню
  • Ти дзвониш
  • Він/Вона/Воно дзвонить
  • Ми дзвонимо
  • Ви дзвоните
  • Вони дзвонять

Examples

  • Я щодня дзвоню тобі - I call you everyday
  • Марія сказала що, вона хоче дзвонити йому вранці - Maria said she wants to call him in the morning
  • Оля і Віктор дзвонять мені коли я вдома - Olga and Viktor call me when I am at home
