Duolingo Bug

Post by Ankers2 »

I use Duolingo for French and Welsh and can no longer advance in eiither of these languages as the program both on the web and on the app takes me back to where I was.

When I leave the app and return I am taken back to the last test in Unit 152. I have done this for two days now.

With Welsh the situation is the same. Similarly, when I leave the app and return I have to finish off Unit 33 again. I have done this for several days now and can’t advance.

I have contacted Duolingo but apart from the form reply thanking me for reporting a bug I have had no useful response.

Has anyone else had this problem

Thanks Suzanne

I learn French and today Duo made a rollback of 14 units. That's irritating. Need to see how things will go. Either progress will be put back where it was before, or I'll have to go through the units I passed before again. I don't want to jump forward, because who knows what new things Duo has added. Maybe it's just a couple of new words, or maybe important additions to better understand grammar.

I've decided to drop the French course for the time being. I find it very frustrating to be taking steps backwards every time they "improve" the content. Every two months or so, I'm sent several units back and I find myself repeating the same sentences over, and over, and over again like a stuck record. It's as if they want you to never finish the course. I think I'll wait for a more stable version of the path, because at the current rate of updates it's a pain to make any progress.

Sorry to hear that you are going to drop the course. I know it's irritating. I NEARLY finished a few years ago and then was rolled back like you. I just do a couple of lessons each morning to keepmy hand in but use other means to impreove my French. I read French novels and I listen to Coffee Break French. Duolingo is no longer my main or only learning tool. Cheers Suzanne

That's interesting as I experienced the opposite. In the snake version I was halfway the course. But after an update around 2-4 weeks ago they moved me almost to the end of the contents, only the units with just "personalized practice" were left undone.
It's frustrating either way, though. After I've decided what I want to do with a course they move me one way or another.

Yes, I have the same in several courses, but not all and not always the same way.
For now my efforts seem to focus on how to go past this. I also don’t want to jump in the courses that I intended to take step by step - and these are the ones that throw me back daily.
In my Portuguese course when just the „personalised practice „ were left I jumped and only did the legendary level. And that lasts.

I also have a problem in the French course, but only when I try to "jump here", I actually jump back. I posted about it here: viewtopic.php?t=14851

Now I know why I seem to be repeating the "subjonctif" over and over. My French course was adjusted.
But I don't mind. I need a lot of repetition with this topic

You're lucky then. Unfortunately the owl makes me repeat the imparfait, which I absolutely do not need. 🤬

Update: Today I was moved back from unit 54 to unit 40 in the so-called "new and improved French course", after yesterday I passed the test to jump to unit 56. 🤬 But I'm still around the same topics: unit 41 is now the imparfait, which is the one I unsuccessfully tried to skip twice. 🤬 It looks like they just removed some of the content from the previous units and made the course shorter.

@EranBarLev Ohh. Duo is showing me today Unit 5 instead of Unit 36. What are the 'sections' now? That is so anti-motivating.

I don't have sections. I haven't got that update yet.

OK, I got the sections today. When I click the unit title, I get the section list, and I can switch to another section. At the bottom of the section there's a link to jump to the next section. This change doesn't bother me as much as the previous ones.

Sections are Duolingo's response to people's complaints about how the Snake is long, how endless is scrolling up and down, how difficult it is to find a specific lesson, how no-one can easily see where in the course they are (how many units are still there before them), because the Snake looked through all its extreme length the same... So yes, this may be considered an improvement, but I want the good old Tree back anyway, because it was uncomparably better than this new mess. Most of all, I miss levels (gradual increase in difficulty in lessons) and trully difficult legendary lessons (typing translations of long complete sentences or even more sentences within one question). Current legendary lessons are a sick joke with all those picture and single word questions. :-(

Many 'yes'. The Tree was a really handy course map. And difficult lessons are absolutely necessary to test what has been learned.
