Back to overview Image

In recent times numbers are considered by many grammarians as a separate part of speech.
Numbers can be used as many different parts of speech.
i.e. parts of speech (POS): numeral, pronoun, noun, adjective, and even a verb.
For more on why POS and word order can help you learn, see : viewtopic.php?t=2484-grammar-word-order&start=10

Neuf - nine or new?

NOTE: neuf can mean "nine" and also "newly made. "

Neuf vs Nouveau : new

Nouveau means something has changed,
while neuf indicates that something is newly-made.
OR neuf is also the number nine.

Ordinal Numbers 🚕 🚜 🚴 🚁 🚀

An ordinal number, such as 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, shows the position or order of something in a list of things:

  • Add the suffix -ière onto the number.
  • For abbreviation in French use the number plus -e.
    2e = 2nd ; 3e = 3rd ; 4e = 4th ; ...

Exceptions

  • 1st : where it refers to a feminine noun use première
or the abbreviation for première : 1re ,
    For other nouns, use premier
or the abbreviation for premier : 1er
  • 2nd : if more than 3 items in the list, use deuxième.
if only 2 items in the list, if it refers to a feminine noun use seconde ,
    otherwise use second.
  • 5th : add a -u after cinq : cinq => cinquième.
  • 9th : change the -f to -v : neuf => neuvième.

Some numbers are used as collective nouns to express a set of numbers, and use de (d') if another other noun is also referred to.

Exceptions for quatre-vingts : 80 to 100

  • The number 80 is the ONLY quatre-vingts (80 and 90 number) that adds an s to vingts, indicating that vingts (twenty) is a plural.

All the other numbers in 80 and 90 sequence do not have the s on vingt (20).

  • quatre-vingt-un (81) is the only number that does NOT add an et (and) before the un (one).
And you will note, there is no s after vingt.
    21, 31, 41, 51, 61 all are {number} + et un
    71: soixante-et-onze (i.e. "sixty and eleven").

Nombres cardinaux en Belgique et en Suisse

Post by SweNedGuy »

Large numbers

The French, the British (who finally agree on something with the French) and most of the rest of the world have different words than the U.S. (nothing new here, especially when it comes to measurement) for expressing these giant numbers.

To try to understand the terms here is a list of them. As you will note the system for naming numbers used in the U.S. is not as logical as that used in other countries (like Great Britain, France, and Germany).
In these countries, a billion – bi meaning two and -llion referring to million – logically has twice as many zeros as a million,
and a trillion (tri means three right?) has three times as many zeros as a million, that’s 18,
this all goes back to basic Latin and is easy to remember because it is logical.

source

Number of zeros France/Britain U.S.
3 mille thousand
6 million million
9 milliard billion
12 billion trillion
15 mille billion quadrillion
18 trillion quintillion
21 mille trillion sextillion
24 quadrillion septillion
27 mille quadrillion octillion
30 quintillion nonillion
33 mille quintillion decillion
36 sextillion undecillion
39 mille sextillion duodecillion
42 septillion tredecillion
45 mille septillion quattuordecillion
48 octillion quindecillion
51 mille octillion sexdecillion
54 nonillion septendecillion
57 mille nonillion octodecillion
60 decillion novemdecillion
63 mille decillion vigintillion
100 googol googol

Note, for examples such as « mille billion », it can also be said « un million de billion »

Number of zeros France/Britain alternate
15 1000 billion mille de billion
21 1000 trillion mille de trillion
27 1000 quadrillion mille de quadrillion
33 1000 quintillion mille de quintillion
39 1000 sextillion mille de sextillion
45 1000 septillion mille de septillion
51 1000 octillion mille de octillion
57 1000 nonillion mille de nonillion
63 1000 decillion mille de decillion

Large numbers also exist in the ICT world. As you could have guessed, since computers use a binary system based on 0's and 1's only, everything such as large numbers is power of 2 based (notation 2^...)

Let's start with 210 which is 1024 : as it is approximately 1000, and IT'ers call this a Kilo.
So a Kilobyte is 1024 bytes.

Thousand (1024) times a Kilobyte is called a Megabyte = 1 MB = 220 = 1.048.576 bytes
Thousand Megabyte is a Gigabyte = 1 GB = 230 = 1.073.741.824 bytes
Next we have the Terabyte = 1 TB = 240 = 1.099.511.627.776 bytes

I am surprised that Google only shows the rounded numbers, such as 1.000.000.000.000 = a trillion, for the Terabyte.

However google explains further:

How many bytes equal a terabyte?
What is a terabyte (TB) and how is it measured?
about 1 trillion bytes
A terabyte (TB) is a unit of digital data that is equal to about 1 trillion bytes. In decimal notation (base 10), a terabyte is exactly 1 trillion bytes. In binary notation, a terabyte is equal to 240 bytes, or 1,099,511,627,776 bytes.

So in ICT approx : 3 zero's = Kilo, 6 zero's = Mega, 9 zero's is Giga, 12 zero's is Tera, ...
