I' waiting for a native, too. But as nobody answered you:
Can it be, that šaty (dress) is at the same time a masculine plural and, in another meaning, the masculine plural of šat (clothing)? And that šaty (dress) is only a plural word with no singular? That's the way I understood it.
I can darkly remember that in another language there was also only one plural word for skirt, and it was explained that one should imagine a folded skirt with many folds and that's where the plural comes from (so to speak "the folds" as "the skirt").
But unfortunately I'm no native. Still waiting. I miss the dedicated Czech volunteers and moderators like VladaFu, AgnusOinas, kacenka, ValaCZE and BoneheadBass!
