Hungarian plurals

Post by LICA98 »

why does the accent disappear in some words when forming the plural but stays in others? for example
madár-madarak
kabát-kabátok
méh-méhek
kéz-kezek
víz-vizek

is there some kind of rule for this 🤔

Keeping the accent in place is the "normal way" to form plurals.

Losing it is irregular, but it happens to some words...

No rule - but patterns. The more words you get familiar with the more you get to "guess" how a word goes. However, good dictionaries will give you the major forms eg kéz, kezet, kezek, keze (nominative, accusative, plural, possessive) or méh, méhet, méhek, méhe.

You can get the same for verbs - but that goes well beyond DL - eg csinál, csinált, csináljon, csinálni or javít, javított, javítson, javítani
