Did Duo just kill off the direct links to the old tree?

Post by gjcdeluxe »

I've been practising specific lessons from the old tree (Italian from English) via the direct links on my duome progress page, but today all the practice pages gave me a 404 error. Trying again a few minutes later, I now get a blank page. Looks like that might be the end for the old tree?

Oh goody... looks like it's back to "the man eats the carrot" difficulty level then. It's a shame that their efforts to steer people towards Duolingo Premium (sorry "Duolingo Super") consist of making the free version worse, rather than making the paid version better.

What does the Web console say om Firefox desktop (developer tools)? Any JS errors?

Right, doesn't work anymore on Firefox Nightly on Android mobile website, coming from Duome progress page.
Getting a blank page.

Wow, that was quick.
Millions of $$$ and they're just wasting their time by patching out old code.

Now the only option is an older Android app V5.52.5 or maybe 3.6x (before summer 2022). Maybe new path/snake tests only started in summer on IOS and later on Android? Could be before November.
My April version works.

Probably aftermath of year another "quick maintenance break". Every Monday afternoon CET (my favorite learning time) when Duolingo kicks me out for those breaks I tremble that afterwards my app might not fire up any more.

At least the old dulingo apk is still working. Gonna be using that until a new workaround is found or if I find an alternative language learning site that has a better experience than the duolingo app. Though the last time I tried to find alternatives, I couldn't find one I really clicked with.

For Asian languages LingoDeer has a big focus on.

The JP content on Busuu looks also quite big. Seems like they're adding or reengineering linguistic elements.

First two course sections are quite long.

Thanks for the suggestions.
LingoDeer was indeed the best of the lot when I last looked, probably will use that once all fixes stop working and I haven't found better sites.
As for Busuu, it's really not for me. Too slow-paced and I'm not into the videos and pictures that they have.

Carrotspy what's this old duolingo apk you're talking about? Do you mean some old Android app to run on the phone or through an Android emulator? https://www-internal.duolingo.com/learn has also been shut down as far as I can tell.

Yes, Duolingo Android Apk 5.52.5 or similar version (5.6x??) from a trusted archive site which you need to download and install locally.

Disable Google Play store auto-updates first (in the settings / Network preferences).

Yes, indirectly, as they changed the addresses:

Before: https://www.duolingo.com/skill/it/Basics-1/practice

Now: https://www.duolingo.com/lesson/unit/1/level/1

How did you figure that out? And how do you correct the url to get to the lesson you want to do?

Yes, indirectly, as they changed the addresses:

Before: https://www.duolingo.com/skill/it/Basics-1/practice

Now: https://www.duolingo.com/lesson/unit/1/level/1

How did you figure that out?

When using a web browser, if one puts the pointer over a link, then the url (web page address) is displayed at the status bar (at the bottom of the browser page).

When I go to my ENG→ITA Duome progress page and move the pointer over the Basics 1 skill icon and the crown at its lower right corner I see that they point to:

https://www.duolingo.com/skill/it/Basics-1
https://www.duolingo.com/skill/it/Basics-1/practice

respectively. However, when I go to my Duolingo learn page and after I click on the checkmark icon, a small box is displayed, and when I hover over the "practice +5 xp" text, I now see that the link points to:

https://www.duolingo.com/lesson/unit/1/level/1

JudieLC wrote: Thu Feb 16, 2023 2:24 am

And how do you correct the url to get to the lesson you want to do?

Mhh, the url cannot be "corrected" as it is the one it currently is. What I mean to say is that the Duome tree no longer can be mapped to the Duolingo Snake.

Under the tree format, there were only two links for each unit: the learn and the practice links.

https://www.duolingo.com/skill/it/Basics-1
https://www.duolingo.com/skill/it/Basics-1/practice

Under the snake format now there are as many links as levels there might be for each skill; for example:

https://www.duolingo.com/lesson/unit/1/level/1
https://www.duolingo.com/lesson/unit/1/level/2
https://www.duolingo.com/lesson/unit/1/level/3
https://www.duolingo.com/lesson/unit/1/level/5

Please note that I'm only talking about the practice links.

As the Duolingo page doesn't seem to include an anchor tag (the "id" tag) for each section (skill), one cannot even create links to immediately be taken to any particular section, that is, one cannot avoid having to scroll through the page to get wherever one may want to go.

Yes, no problem.

One thing one learns about Duolingo is that all this searching for ways around its changes is a lot more hassle than it's worth. They might work for a little while and that's it.

Very, very few things are actually worth the trouble of going in deep. In my particular case, one that did was changing the Arabic fonts along with their size. Getting rid of most their cartoonish characters was another one, though this one was quite straightforward: via an ad-blocker.

Yeah, changing the size of Arabic fonts was a game changer for me, too. Too bad it only works on the computer and not on the phone. There's one character that I keep getting in matching on the phone that's so faint at first I thought there was nothing there. And I'm going to keep reporting it till they fix it.

gmads So exactly what lessons would I be practicing with this method? Obviously it works and one can construct something like this with schools to have an idea of where you are. But exactly what are you doing? Are you doing a lesson? Doing a review of a lesson, an overall review or a unit challenge? I think it might be possible to figure out what it is you are doing without looking at the snake.

As I have finished my Italian course, I needed to take a look at an incomplete course... I have an abandoned Japanese course, so... here it is...

Unit 1: Use hiragana << this unit I finished... so everything is in yellow

Guidebook
https://www.duolingo.com/guidebook/ja/1

First circle: Use hiragana
https://www.duolingo.com/lesson/unit/1/level/1

Second circle: Review
https://www.duolingo.com/lesson/unit/1/level/2

There's an empty treasure box

Third circle: Use hiragana
https://www.duolingo.com/lesson/unit/1/level/4

There's a "Level Up" thingy... opens on the current page (that is, it does not seem to open on a separate page)

Unit 2: Use hiragana << this unit has not been started yet... so the available icons are in purple

Guidebook
https://www.duolingo.com/guidebook/ja/2

First circle ("Start" circle): Use hiragana / Lesson 1 of 6
https://www.duolingo.com/lesson

The remaining icons are all in grey.

Unit 3: Say hello and goodbye, use katakana << in a different color
Guidebook
https://www.duolingo.com/guidebook/ja/3

JUMP HERE?
https://www.duolingo.com/lesson/unit/3/test

From unit 3 onward, the scheme is the same

From that, I would say that Duo uses now a generic non-changing URL for lessons (i.e. https://www.duolingo.com/lesson) which is handled internally. This means that you can create a bookmark for it and it will always take you to your current learning lesson, whether it is in unit 1 or unit 54.

Practice links are always like so:

https://www.duolingo.com/lesson/unit/##/level/#

where the double numeral character corresponds to the Unit # being reviewed, and where the single numeral character corresponds to the Level # practice task.

Other than maybe some peculiarities (like the "level up" option, etc), there doesn't seem to be much more than that. Quite straightforward.

How to create your own "Snake".

With some patience and a little work one may create a "Text Snake" via a simple web page. Instead of having to deal with a long string of icons —which waste a lot of space— one could have a visually pleasing and easier to use Snake (similar to the page you referred to earlier).

It seems like mapping the snake to a tree is just not a viable alternative. Even if a tree could contain all the information you need for it not to be confusing, you still have the problem the snake has, a set path for future lessons. It probably has some use for people who finished courses but still want to practice, but for me it just can't work anymore. Hopefully support for older versions of the app lasts a while.

It would be useless anyway. Not only that exact remapping is not possible. After remapping, the progress for individual skills would not work. duome is working on something, he's a genius. I believe it will work.

It could work if/when we have duome browser extension to fetch data directly from our browser session - it's the only solution I can think of at the moment.

Weanwhile, I did the mapping for everything from English, from French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish (please, test it out).

The thing is - in public data there is no clear indication of where exactly you are on your path and which lessons should be available for you. If you click on something you are not supposed to see, you will be redirected to duolingo front page. And I don't think these practice sessions this will ever be reflected in the old tree progress. You do get XP from these sessions, but you don't get levels, crowns, whatever.

At least you do practice "Mystères..." when you do the French unit 35 level 6 lesson (or unit 36 level 6, or unit 37 level 5). So if you want to practice something specific - you can do that without infinite scrolling through the path.

The grey dots under skill icons take you to what used to be different crown levels of the same skill - these levels can now be scattered across several units as in the above example.

There are lots of "unit review" lessons that consist of several skills - I don't show these but I can display them as more dots under skill icons.

As links are now generic, one just needs to make sure that one is logged-in in the correct account or that the correct course is enabled.

At the Skills tab, all links are still old links:
skill icon: https://www.duolingo.com/skill/it/Basics-1
crown icon: https://www.duolingo.com/skill/it/Basics-1/practice
skill name: https://www.duolingo.com/skill/it/Basics-1/1

And the grey dots are not acting as links... not in my case at least.

The mapping of the Norwegian-English tree looks a bit off (1-2 units/lessons) on my end, especially towards the end. For example, some green dots under the tree link to levels that have been replaced by a chest on the path. How did you do the mapping, manually or through some logic/script?
