genders

Post by Chess »

alright question why do some objects show up as one gender then others have another, is it like French how they have le and la (i think) for things? Also if so then is there a easy way to remember what is η and what is ο? Thanks in advance.

There are three grammatical genders in Greek - masculine (αρσενικό), feminine (θηλυκό), neuter (ουδέτερο). The definite articles are the following

So, ο is for a masculine noun; η is for a feminine noun; το is for a neuter noun.
Do not try to find any logic about a noun's gender. There is no reason a chair is feminine (η καρέκλα), a table is neuter (το τραπέζι) etc. Grammatical genders are just a way to classify nouns. I suggest you always learn a noun alongside its article. Instead of learning that the Greek word for "lamp" is "λάμπα", you should learn "η λάμπα".

Moreover, have in mind that a grammatical gender is not the same as a biological sex. Even though a girl is female in sex, it's a neuter noun in Greek (το κορίτσι). Likewise, the boy is "το αγόρι".
