The following posts in this thread show sample sentences from the guidebooks of the 12-unit Duolingo course Cantonese from Chinese Mandarin. The audio links point to original Duolingo sources.
Translations to English were made automatically by google translate and are not high quality. I will attempt to correct them by hand little by little.

Re: Cantonese from English

Here a video about differences between Cantonese and Mandarin Chinese:

These are the key learnings from the video:

These days speakers of either language typically write in standard Chinese but when Cantonese speakers read standard Chinese they say each word using Cantonese pronunciation Which creates the misconception that Cantonese is exactly the same as Mandarin except for the pronunciation, but that's not the case.

In vernacular (spoken) Cantonese there are also differences in vocabulary and grammar.

  • Pronunciation:

    • Mandarin 4 tones and 1 neutral tone; every syllable ends in a vowel or in a nasal sound.

    • Cantonese has six tones with a wider range (mid-to-high and low) + sylables may also end in stop consonants p/t/k

    • Each character is pronounced differently

    • Pronunciation differences are often consistent

  • Grammar

    • Both languages are fundamentally SVO

    • In imperative sentences in Mandarin the indirect object comes before the direct object and in Cantonese the other way around.

    • Comparisons are formed differently – the adjective in Mandarin comes last, in Cantonese before the comparative word

  • Vocabulary

    • Sometimes Mandarin and Cantonese use different words to represent the same concept

    • Sometimes one character may mean on thing in one language, but something slightly different in the other

    • The difference in vocabulary could be as high as 50%
