Yes, indeed, since I uninstalled the app and use Duolingo via mobile phone browser, the challenging part sometimes is clicking tiles (i.e. I know which one I want to select, but it may take several tries), or even scrolling to get to see the text I'm supposed to translate.

This may be an A/B test or it may be an actual already-decided-on change being implemented slowly. We won't know until Duolingo decides to tell us and/or it becomes obvious that most people have the version already and the changeover process is continuing and/or the hypothetical A/B test is discontinued, with all accounts reverting to the original.

I'm guessing this one will roll out much quicker than the snake, as I've been slapped with the switch to the hearts system on the web already. It took more than several months after hearing about people getting the snake for me to get forced over to it.

4 hour wait to reclaim a heart after a wrong answer. Sheesh.

I too now have the hated hearts on the browser version. I think it's totally counter-productive to punish making mistakes by restricting further progress. Saying you must wait five hours (or whatever it is) for hearts to replenish serves no purpose at all. If I'm prevented from continuing at the time I choose, then no, I probably won't set an alarm to come back in five hours to try again. Also I don't want to practice easy material I've already mastered, just to "win back" lost hearts.

With me, the simple material is sometimes not so easy. I like to do repetitions to get hearts

I found the change to hearts today. I have been away and used the app to keep my nearly 4 year streak, as I usually do in that case. I disliked the heart system on the app so I go back to beginning lessons to get through without running out of hearts. Not long ago I discovered I couldn't buy any more streak freezes. Now with the web change to hearts, I won't have to feel bad quitting. I can continue learning Irish elsewhere and feel good I got to a 1377 day streak.

Got hearts now. :(

Guess this is only a problem for new lessons.

It converted all my lingots. Wonder if they're going to charge me for legendary now?

They weren't charging you for legendary before? I always had lingots deducted when I did legendary the usual way.

I didn't notice getting a currency boost today as you do every ten days on the web, maybe that is no more also?

I got one. It updated lingots, which I can't see on Duolingo. But I did see the updated lingot count on my Duome profile.

@JudieLC I have an old account. I was so far down the tree when legendary came out, that it would have been really hard to get enough lingots to do it. They made an exception for those people.

If the date on your Duome page is correct, I started Duolingo before you. (My Duome page is not up to date cause I've been on private.) So I'm not sure that's it.

Mine is actually still OK, for practice - the free random barbell button is still gone, but I can still click anywhere on the snake to choose free post-legendary practice lessons. So that's all good. :)

The layout has stayed a bit weird though, since I got the hearts - I now have to click my browser setting to "Desktop site" (edit - and go to landscape view) to see certain features like the shop and friends achievements.

I think the blue barbell on the website used to connect to a link which is still active...

https://www.duolingo.com/practice

but in the next few weeks that link may not be as good. I think its software used strength percentages on vocab to pick the questions you got, and they're not updating strength percentages anymore.

For me they did a blank update to set the vocab for every skill in the first 120 units to 1.000 & left the remaining units as is. But those strength percentages will fall over time and I think it's picking algorithm will gradually get worse. Already I see the questions I get on the snake affected, especially in the practice parts of the snake, because of last week's software updates.

So I logged in on the web browser on my phone the other day and got this:

I thought it might have been just on my phone, but it's on my computer web browser, too.

I still have the blue practice dumbbell and it still works, for now.

I had gems on my phone app and lingots on my computer on the browser version of Duolingo. So I guess they got combined.

@ I thought the conversion factor was 1:10

The conversion rate seems to be variable. I started out with roughly 37,000 lingots and ended up with roughly 56,000-57,000 gems. (I had never used the app and hence had no existing gems.)

I imagine they're tracking the retention rates and maybe other metrics, at varying exchange rate, but to what end is unclear, since this is a one-time-only situation.

At first I didn't like the hearts but after trying it out a while, I think it's actually a good thing. I like that the practice-to-earn hearts feature is increasingly becoming tailored to what I need to practice, instead of me trying to figure out what I forgot and then searching for it. I don't mind taking a short break from the super-challenging stuff and doing a little review now and then. Though I completed the tree years ago, I like that Duo keeps updating to keep me challenged, and that has kept me from getting bored and moving on.

I haven't noticed the practice to earn hearts feature becoming tailored to what I need to practice. I mostly use it in Arabic, and it's pretty easy, as it gives me pretty much the same series of words and sounds every time. With an occasional very easy sentence.

Well, the dreaded day has finally arrived for me. My lingots were removed and replaced by a slightly larger number of gems. Hearts have appeared in the top right hand corner, giving me 5 hearts!! Is this the end of Duolingo for me?

I’m trying to look on the bright side, hoping that the gems will work more efficiently than the Lingots had been doing since April. I had found that the last group of lingots won for a quest would nearly always vanish. If I did two quests, the two lingots for the second quest would disappear before the day was up. If I did three quests, the 2 or 3 lingots granted for the third would go. And if it was just 1 lingot gained from opening a treasure chest, it would go if it was the last gain of the day.

If the problem persists with gems, then it’ll be a real grievance if they charge huge sums for reloading hearts but fail to give the correct cash for quests. For that was today’s worst shock; that little red heart sign with a red 5 beside it, top far right on the page. In nearly three years on DL I had avoided hearts by using a browser, never the app.

One thing that could well cause a loss of hearts is mistakes over gender. I have noticed three times recently that the new Norwegian course has asked me to give the Norwegian for a word inclusive of its indefinite article, despite the fact that it had previously only been mentioned without any article, in singular or plural form, from neither of which can you deduce the gender. I had to go to an online dictionary to check, and a few days ago bought a small dictionary for the purpose. Hover hints are not available for such translations.

Worse, today the program twice rolled over before I could reply and so chalked up a mistake. In one case I hadn’t typed anything at all. I would have lost two hearts or lives, had the hearts system already been activated. Bad enough to only get 7xp out of 10 (on revision), even worse if you lose lives.

I’ll try to live with hearts and report back on how it goes. For now..

Today I have seen my lingots (about 4900) been converted to gems (about 6500).

That makes about 7.5 times the lingots. But it asks 100 gems (instead of 10) when you try legendary level.

So my lingots are equal less legendary attempts. Why so?

Today my 1699 lingots was converted to 12 000 gems Or at least they claim I had 1699 lingots, I personally don't remember. I spent 100 failing a norwegian legendary, as they seem to only accept one correct translation a lot of the time now and are slow to add new ones I keep reporting. I do not remember getting any for continuing the streak, then again the streak doesn't show when you fail a legendary as the first lesson of the day.

A quick report on my first day with hearts and gems. I was far too optimistic about the 'funny money' losses. I. got 28 gems for completing 3 Quests by 9pm, with the loss of three of my 5 hearts. Just before midnight I checked the gems figure again, and found it had dropped by ten, leaving only 18 of the 28 won.
With two hearts left, I had decided it might be fatal to try a new lesson, so I had gone back to revise a lesson from Unit 2. No risk taking now! With everything correct that last lesson raised me up in all 3 Quests, so in one go I moved from no Quests achieved to three done.

Faced with the possibility of doing a commentary on. a story for 10 extra xp, which normally I would have. accepted, I declined it as Lord knows how many hearts I could have lost in the process. A perverse effect of this hearts system is that you just don't dare take unnecessary risks.

I think you must have meant 1.5 times the lingots.

Why the discrepancy over the ten-fold increase in the charge for Legendary? Well, for concluding 3 quests you actually are now supposed to get 28 gems rather than 5 or 6 lingots. That's 5 to 6 times more, so really the cost of Legendary has only doubled. The motivation behind the move? Encourage more people to pay for Plus/Super, so they can get Legendary for free. T'hose shareholders want their dividends too!
