Review

Please follow the previous lesson ( viewtopic.php?p=7174#p7174) before you begin today’s lesson. :)
Review what you have learned by answering these questions in the comments below. :)

1) What did you learn in the last lesson?
2) How well were you able to catch up with the lesson?
3) How different (and difficult) did learning the letters and sounds seem to you?
4) Was the time of one week sufficient to learn the first lesson? Was the time too less? Or, was it too much?
5) How did you practise the sounds of the Hindi ‘svars’?

I posted an article on Romanized Hindi some days ago, if you have missed it, read it here! :) ((https://archive.ph/j2Uhm) )
If you are wondering why am I using ‘Romanized Hindi’ when I am completely against it (to a great extent), I feel that I must teach the Hindi letters and the first few lessons with Romanized Hindi. It will be easier to catch the sounds and practice them. I will stop using Romanized Hindi as soon as I finish teaching the Hindi varnmala (letters) and a few vocabulary lessons.

Today’s Session

Today, we will learn:
• what vyanjan is
• how is it different is it from svars
• some letters (from vyanjan)
• how to pronounce each letter that you have learned

I also have an exciting activity after the session! ^_^

व्यंजन [vyanjan]

The letters in the Hindi alphabet that are made of two sounds ( letter + svar)
Example: क = क् + अ (kuh = [half]k + uh)
Explanation: This might be confusing to many. I want you to remember some rules before we move on any further:
1) All the letters in the ‘vyanjan’ group are having two sounds.
2)The two sounds, always are comprised of the letter and one svar.
3) This is a rule that the letter is pronounced half without a svar.

Differences between svar and vyanjan
Difference 1: Swar are independent sounds, vjanjan are made of two[or more] sounds.
Difference 2: All the swars have matras, vyanjans do not. (will be covered some time later)
Difference 3:* Swars usually aren’t used in the middle of words, instead matras are used.

व्यंजन (Vyanjan)

The best way to learn the huge vyanjan list is to learn each horizontal row. One at a time. I will be focussing on two things at the moment:
1) how is the vyanjan formed
2) pronunciation

Row 1
क = क् + अ
ख = ख् + अ
ग = ग् + अ
[घ]( http://forvo.com/word/घ/#hi] = घ् + अ

Row 2
च = च् + अ
छ = छ् + अ
ज = ज् + अ
झ = झ् + अ

Row 3
ट = ट् + अ
ठ = ठ् + अ
ड = ड् + अ
ढ = ढ् + अ

Row 4
त = त् + अ
थ = थ् + अ
द = द् + अ
ध = ध् + अ
न = न् + अ

Row 5
प = प् + अ
फ = फ् + अ
ब = ब् + अ
भ = भ् + अ
म = म् + अ

Row 6
य = य् + अ
र = र् + अ
ल = ल् + अ
व = व् + अ

Row 7

स = स् + अ
ह = ह् + अ

Row 8

We have covered all the letters! :) Try memorising them all with their sounds. :) Do not begin writing yet, we will begin writing the next week. It is important to concentrate on one thing before moving on to another. I mentioned that it will be super easy to write if you knew all the letters in the previous lesson, did I not? :)

What I want you to do in the comments below this post?
1) Provide answers to the ‘Review’ Section.
2) Which letters did you find easy to learn?
3) Which letters were unusually difficult for you to pronounce? Please explain your problems. I will try my best to help you. :)
4) What do you think about the activity? Did you find it useful ? In what way did you find it useful?
5) [Please be honest] :P Did you start writing the Hindi script?
6) Other suggestions/comments related to the post. :)

Important Note: Did you find the text familiar? Were you able to recall the letters as you had a glance on the texts? There are certain things I want to cover about the letters and begin writing (yay!) next week.

Till next week! :)

Dear Jack,

I made these lessons back when Duo forums were alive. Unfortunately, I did not save the lessons in time and thought I had lost them. Thank you so much for posting them here. :)
