'The Prisoner' opening dialogue in Esperanto

Post by Farjo »

I thought I'd have a go at this. Feel free to suggest corrections or alternatives, but explain why.

'The Prisoner' was a 1967 British TV series about a spy who quits angrily and then is abducted. We don't know why he's quit or which country has abducted him. In some episodes he tries to escape, but mainly his captors try to extract information from him.

The opening sequence contains this dialogue.

In English:
Where am I?
In the village.
What do you want?
Information.
Whose side are you on?
That would be telling. We want information... information... information.
You won't get it!
By hook or by crook we will.
Who are you?
The new number 2.
Who is number 1?
You are number 6.
I am not a number; I am a free man!
Ha ha ha ha ha ha.....

Translated:
Kie mi estas?
En la vilaĝo.
Kion vi volas?
Informon.
Ĉe kies flanko vi estas?
Tio estus diranta. Ni volas informon... informon... informon.
Vi ne prenos ĝin.
Iamaniere faros.
Kiu vi estas?
Mi estas la nova numero du.
Kiu estas numero unu?
Vi estas numero ses.
Mi ne estas numero, mi estas homo libera.
Ha ha ha ha ha ha.....

The most difficult lines to translate were "Whose side are you on" and "By hook or by crook, we will". Thanks for your comments.

That would be telling -> Tio estus diranta.

"That would be telling” is an idiomatic expression used to say that you cannot tell someone something because it is a secret. It is often used in a playful or teasing way.

You cannot translate with "Tio estus diranta", this means nothing in this context. You could say: "(Bedaŭrinde) tiu (informo) estas sekreto."

You won't get it -> vi ne prenos ĝin.

You can't translate get with take. I would say "vi ne ricevos ĝin".

By hook or by crook we will (get the information) -> Iamaniere faros

The original verb is "to get", so I would translate into something like "(Ia) maniere ni sukcesos", to avoid emphasis the success and avoid the repetition of ricevi.

Ĉe kies flanko vi estas?

There is this sample citation in vortaro "stari sur ies flanko", so following this you could write "Sur kies flanko vi staras?"

Anyway, congratulation for your translation, it's a difficult exercise.
