[GRAMM] Directions and positions

Post by Basler Biker »

Directions and positions
In Swedish, it is very common that words change depending on whether it describes a position or a direction. You have already encountered the two words for where in Swedish; Var (position) & Vart (direction), but now it is time to expand on the subject. The following table summarizes the most important words:
English Position Direction
Here Här Hit
There Där Dit
Up Uppe Upp
Down Nere Ned/Ner
Home Hemma Hem
Let’s make things a bit clearer with a few examples:
”I am here” - Jag är här
”She is coming here” - Hon kommer hit

“He is there” – Han är där
”I am going there” - Jag går dit
”She is up on the roof” - Hon är uppe på taket
“You climb up on the roof” - Du klättrar upp på taket
“She is down on the first floor” - Hon är nere på den första våningen
”He jumps down from the roof” - Han hoppar ned/ner från taket
“We are not at home” - Vi är inte hemma
“They are going home” - De åker hem

I have a question: Is there more of these words that change forms when expressing direction or position? If so, where can I find a more extended list?

Apparently this text is an extract from the DL Notes and Tips https://duome.eu/tips/en/sv
I do not have a more extended/extensive/exhaustive/complete list...but for sure the wWw is WIDE and some list should be out there ;-)

I have been learning Swedish (from German) with the help of the books and studying packages (incl CD-s) from HUEBER (German). They are very good. Similar are from INTERTAAL, and the way both work, teaching formats, make it seem as there is a link (or cooperation) between those two companies (or one has taken over the other) Really recommendable.

A quick search lead me to transparent.com => The Swedish Language Blog. Or also see HiNative.com.
Search for RUMADVERBIAL or look for "Particles of Position and Direction.

For sure this one is missing...

  • i vs in vs inne
  • ...

= = =
This one is from "transparent" https://blogs.transparent.com/swedish/p ... direction/
Position – Direction:
Where? – Where to? – Where from?

hemma (at home) – hem (home) – hemifrån (from home)
borta (away) – bort (away) – bortifrån (from a long way away)
inne (inside, indoors) – in (in, inside, indoors) – inifrån (from inside)
ute (outside, outdoors) – ut (out, outside, outdoors) – utifrån (from outside)
uppe (up [there]) – upp (up) – uppifrån (from above)
nere (down [there]) – ner, ned (down) – nerifrån (from below)
frame (in front [here]) – fram (forward, on) – framifrån (from the front)
= = =

And of course sometimes they occur together in a sentence ...

  • Jag går in i huset. Jag ser ingenting här inne.
  • I enter the house. I don't see anything in here.
