Your avatar: what's the story behind.

Post by SweNedGuy »

According to what I have read on the forum for Portuguese speakers, Duo now is advising against using your photo as an avatar.
As usual, privacy reasons are the pretext. Future releases may ban photos allowing to identify users.

So what is your avatar:

The photo in DL shows me ...
The photo in DL shows me the way I looked 25 or more years ago ...
I am one in the crowd ...
I am (ab)using the photo of a celebrity ...
It's a photo of my pet, didn't you notice?
It refers to my professional activity ...
It refers to my favorite sports or leisure activity ...

OK, my avatar is an owl from a 1970's Dutch comics series for children. I will post some YT videos once I find them.

My avatar is a sextant, a nautical instrument used to navigate by the sun and stars (technically it measures the angular distance between two visible objects). Nowadays everyone uses a GPS of course, but knowing how to use one of these is still a requirement to obtain a high sea boat license.

Mine is me on a Royal Enfield motorcycle many many moons ago. Not much chance of recognising me from that. I did fall for the ”create your avatar" thing and lost my photo for a while. Luckily, I was able to upload it again, eventually.

I like the photos even in if they are grainy old ones. Makes it more personal.

So sorry @IceVajal for your loss.

Mine is a guitar. Found one with a background from the ages.

We grew up with guitar playing in our family.
Always a guitar or more in one of our homes.

Interesting enough , lots of Spanish songs were played while singing in Italian. 🙂

Sorry about your cat, @IceVajal .

Mine is the Starry Night TARDIS based on the Doctor Who episode "Vincent and the Doctor", in which the Doctor meets Vincent Van Gogh.

Funnily enough, my avatar caused someone who joined Duolingo way after me to accuse me of stealing her avatar! :D Hers was a Starry Night image without a TARDIS and in a slightly different shade of blue. She persisted in accusing me in several posts further down the same comment thread and called me "very bad". :D
P.S. She doesn't appear to be on Duolingo anymore.

Surely if anyone ought to complain it would be Van Gogh!

Edit: mind you, I had to expand it a lot to see the TARDIS

All my cats are from Russia, but when I named her Cima I didn't know that it sounds like the Russian зима which means winter.

And my duo will get expanded to a trio again. Sooner or later.

The name Cima was 8nspired by....

"Sima is a gender-neutral name of Hebrew origin and a special way to honor the pride and joy baby represents. Meaning “treasure” in Jewish culture, Sima is a sweet-toned name that can inspire all parents to delight in their little creation."
https://www.thebump.com/b/sima-baby-name

"Sima is a feminine given name that is used in different countries. In Iran (Persian: سيما) and Turkey it is a feminine name. It literally means face (and a beautiful face by implication)."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sima_(giv ... mplication).

You see, I did some research to find a perfect name for her.

Mine is a photo of one of the Liver Birds atop the Royal Liver Building on the Liverpool waterfront.

Although it might look like a sunset taken from a height, it was actually taken in the middle of the day from below. The thick orangey-red haze was apparently dust from the Sahara desert which had got sucked up by some freak weather event and somehow deposited over Northwest England - weird! :)

@ Davey944676 I always enjoy seeing that, as I lived there for 7 years many moons ago, as John Little would say :-). I have a constant reminder of those times with a Linda Poggio print of the Playhouse on our living room wall. I wonder how many non-UK folks mispronounce "Liver"? :-)
P.S. Mine is our late cavachon, Nemo. Gone 2 years now, but his name still crops up in the Latin exercises :-)

Oh wow, of course - the different pronunciations had never even occurred to me! Yes, I think an impromptu lesson is in order...

1) The "Liver" in "Liverpool" is pronounced just like the offal/body part "liver".

2) The "Liver" in "Liver Building" and "Liver Bird" rhymes with dive/hive/jive etc. :)

As it happoens I don't think I've personally ever heard any foreigners/tourists mispronounce them, which is quite surprising when you think about it. :)
