The Goethe-Institut is referred to frequently by various language learners and so is "Deutsche Welle", Germany's international broadcaster. As I'm not learning German I never checked out these resources

I'd like to recommend the online dictionary LEO, "Software-Archiv und Online-Wörterbuch".

It contains a rich vocabulary that includes a plethora of improbable scientific and technical terms (e.g. "ribbed base plate with inner wing rail fastening" = "Rippenplatte mit innerer Flügelschienenverspannung [Eisenbahn]"... you never know when that will come in handy!).

There are various languages to choose from, plus it offers an integrated, sophisticated vocabulary trainer, as well as a grammar trainer with tons of examples:
