Velge eller bestemme

Post by weerwater »

Again the DL Law2 skill puzzles me.

"Politibetjenten valgte å pågripe en person som bor i leiligheten."
gets translated into English:
The police officer decided to arrest a person who lives in the apartment.

However looking up that verb in the DL dictionary
https://www.duolingo.com/dictionary/Nor ... uery=valge
shows nothing like deciding.

Looking up the preterite 'valgte' on the other hand, surpisingly does bring up 'decided'.

Hence my puzzle:
Is the verb å velge in popular Norwegian used for making decisions too, or at least preferably? Or does the use of å velge have to do with the type of work/office when decisions have to be made?
Confirmation eitherway would be very interesting for proper understanding in what cases to opt for å bestemme seg and in what instances å velge should be used.

You did not look up velge the verb just valg the noun. There is a difference.

å velge means to choose or to decide.

Jeg valgte den grønne genseren.
or
Hun valgte å ta bussen

Well I had. I'm sorry.
The link I included is one of the other steps I made on the DL dictionary.
So it's indeed not that link I should have included. Thanks.

DL says this:

Question stands: Why not å bestemme seg.

Bestemme seg could be use instead of velge for sure

Hun bestemte seg for å ta bussen and hun valgte å ta bussen means the same thing...

Thanks Liv,

I will do some major editing to all the 'a'-s in the valg. Thank you for correcting me. It has to be an 'e' of course.

Just some input from me.

If you use "bestemme seg for", that sounds to me like it's a result of a process of deciding that ends up in a choice. "Velge" can be more immediate or even automatic (like something you just do every day because you usually do exactly that, without going through much of a decision process).

You could also use "beslutte", which to me is better than "bestemme seg for" here. "Politiet besluttet å pågripe en person …"

Hello Liv :) Likewise!

(I have been unable to make myself heard at the Duolingo forum the past few days unfortunately … But I'm happy to be here!)

Yes for some reason you and everything you posted disappeared. It has happened before with your account. Glitch probably. And does not matter now as everything is disappearing.

Looks like they closed sentence discussion and made it read-only as expected I suppose.
