This is my first time really using Duolingo for a language I don't already have some knowledge of, so I am appreciating how we are not taught rote lessons on words or grammar, but instead, we see/hear/say examples, and then we pick up the structure (grammar) along with the spelling (orthography).

So my guess is that by not starting the sentence with a pronoun (mwen/ou/li) the sentence is using the indication "that."
se yon tigason -> that's a boy
se yon timoun -> that's a child

vs.

li se yon tigason -> he's a boy
li se yon timoun -> it's a child

BUT I don't make any decisions yet about whether my thoughts are right; I hold things in tension until I find out more during other lessons.
