How does one tell which words are feminine and masculine for purposes of lenition? Are there indicators or are is it just memorization?

There once was a post on Duolingo talking about a lot -- 8? -- masculine and feminine declensions; and how in old Irish there were a lot more than that. For me anyway it was more complex than it was helpful. There are common patterns that you'll come to recognize, but for me it came down to memorization.

When you learn the nominative and genitive declensions there are some general rules. You can always look up on www.focloir.ie and it will tell whether it is feminine or masculine.
