Hello, thank you for posting this. It's strange, because I have the latest update on the app, yet both the mobile and web versions show a Russian path with only 51 units. Is your 61-unit path a new development? Best wishes.

As daKanga explains, Duolingo is continually adding new versions of its most followed courses.
The problem is that the user doesn't have the power to select which course wants to study.
However, when starting from scratch, you can try a trick:

  • Start the desired course (in this case, Russian from English) in different browsers and devices. When you finally get the version you want (61 units), sign up.

From then on, you'll have that path across all browsers and devices.

From what I see, today April 13, the 61 unit version is the default version when starting from scratch.
Insisting, one out of every six times you get the 51 units one.

But it can change at any time, any day.

I tested starting Russian from scratch in an incognito window. You still get the old and the new tree randomly. I seem to mostly get the old tree when I do this: out of 20 attempts, 13 were the 51 unit-tree. So it must be still in the testing phase.

The new course is easy to spot even in the first exercise: the new tree does not have мотор and радио, and the old one does not have Добро пожаловать. If you get an image challenge with мама/дом/радио or мама/мотор/папа you are in the 2015 tree.

Wow, cool! How do you do even that now that Duolingo is path-only?

The tree definition is still there in one's extended profile. It is likely that the path still uses the tree as an underlying structure. I find it easier to compare different flavours of courses by looking at their trees.

Is there a way to see which words a skill has? At least one example of each lexical item, I mean. Knowing all forms that are theoretically unlocked in a lesson is probably impossible (e.g., a course may not even have a single sentence that uses that particular form).

I have the feeling that I did not get the word count correct in some lessons (I have been documenting the current tree lately).

There are two places at which you can see the vocabulary:

One is in your extended user profile (duolingo.com/users/<YOUR_ID>

another one is in the vocabulary overview (duolingo.com/vocabulary/overview).

The first collection is typically much shorter than what advertised as the "course word count" or "lexeme" count.

[edit 2023.08.15: I have realized that the extended profile shows only 10 words per skill, i.e. the word list is seriously flawed and cannot be used for comparison. I removed from it this post for the time being to prevent confusion.]

The list in the vocabulary overview appears to be a complete list of everything but it does contain all possible conjugated or declined forms as separate entries so that list is severely bloated.

There is one more difference between the two sets: the set in the "user data" remains constant throughout your course so it would (theoretically) correspond to the number of words introduced in the course. The overview data contains the words /lexemes that you have actually learned and it keeps increasing even after you complete the regular course - this happens when you do legendary lessons.

In order to compare the complete word sets of the new and the old course one would need do have both trees completed to the legendary level. I do not have the new course at that level.

The list of differences makes sense but isn't complete. Scroll to Animals: we have more new animals than just лиса and свинья. Phrases has "ну" which we defeinitely did not have in the course before. It is just complicated to parse because of how much shuffling we made, a word going from one skill to a different one. Can it be the issue? Видит from Accusative is listed as removed. According to my data, it is now in Present, lesson 3, so your list should have marked it as a new word, right?.

But the number of words cannot be right. 783 words and 948 words? The old tree had 2279 "words" (items introduced in lessons) and about 1500–1550 actual Russian words/expressions. It cannot be less than my old wordcount of about 1450 that I made in 2015—as it turned out later, I failed to accurately document our latest skills (we were working intensely by that point).

Here is what you can consider the official list of the 2015 tree. It is as close to the dictionary definition of a word as it can get for a beginner course. I probably screwed up and forgot a couple words but the list is mostly accurate, having been gradually filled up during the development of the course.

Now, I am not sure how being legendary changes anything. Does it have to do with the word forms? Duolingo teaches you "words" that can actually be a lot of things:

  • just one particular form ("writes")

  • which can be a duplicate (e.g., "take a left turn" and "take the box off the shelf" should be taught with different take lexemes)

  • a group of forms (see/sees or create/creates/creating/created)

  • which can be a generic ("the learner can make -ing forms already, so let's dump coming/going/painting/writing/reading/having... all at once for future use")

  • a set expression ("as though", "Good morning")

  • a character exercise ("chip" vs. "tip"). Жаль, ет, дева, чин etc. from your list are audio exercises to distinguish sounds.

As you move through the course, you must "learn" every single entry in every lesson at the very minimum. Even with a few duplicates along the way, it is over 2000 "words". If you have a group of "forms" (true forms of a generic), Duolingo thinks you know this "word" as long as you've seen ANY form. If that affects the number of words, even the word count of our old tree would be over 4000 if you've seen most of the forms. Russian full-form adjectives have 12 unique forms each, and we usually have at least the Nominative four (masc/fem/neut/plural) and a few more common forms we'd want to use.

I have an old 79-skill vocabulary overview with 4085 entries so based an what you are writing it should be fairly complete. The new course vocabulary that I have access to has 2995 entries therefore I assume it is not complete yet. The vocabulary overview lists contain various forms of the same words. It seems that more and more forms are added to the list as one continues the legendary lessons.

The course data as presented here contains the base forms of each word, it has 2036 entries. I wish I knew how to get a similar list for the new course - a comparison would be much easier then.
