Progress in Irish Homework Answers

These lesson-by-lesson answer keys for Progress in Irish have been used by countless students in New England-area Irish classes since 1989, and have been gradually "proofread" through the years. They may, however, still contain the occasional error, and if you find any, please let us know. They are typeset as individual sheets, as they have been designed for use as hand-outs in Irish classes.

Many lessons of Progress in Irish contained an exercise simply titled "Léigh" (Read). We chose to reinterpret these as "Léigh agus cuir Béarla air seo" -- an extra opportunity to practice translating. Feel free to disregard these sections if you are a literalist.

There is often more than one "correct" way to express a thought in Irish. Máiréad Ní Ghráda relied heavily on the Caighdeán Oifigiúil in the creation of this book; every effort has been made to keep these answers "correct" within the context of Progress in Irish -- within the confines of the vocabulary & phrases which had been taught up to any given point where you might find yourself preferring some other answer.

We understand that the various dialects may have equally appropriate equivalents to these answers, but for the sake of brevity, and of consistency with Ní Ghráda's book, we have preferred answers derived solely from the teachings of Progress in Irish.

We hope that the countless students of Irish who will read and/or download these answer key sheets will appreciate Ní Ghráda's book all the more, now that they can check their work against the work of others.

Le meas,
Conradh na Gaeilge of New England

How to find your way through the textbook “Progress In Irish”
The book “Progress In Irish” contains 72 lessons covering all of the main features of grammar in the Irish Language but unfortunately it has no subject index. Many students work sequentially through all the lessons but still find it hard to see how it all comes together and how the various lessons relate to each other. This table lets you see how all the contents can be viewed as separate streams, and using it you can find all the related material more easily
